Description

Captain America + Green Lantern (Alan Scott)

Alan Rogers was classified 4f in the early days of the US’ participation in WW2.  Unknown to him at the time, however, Rex Stark had been experimenting with super soldier enhancement serums.  The primary drawback of these serums was that they only lasted for an hour, then were not useable again by the same subject for 24 hours.  Elswehere, a mystical artifact, a green lamp, was discovered and US scientists thought the Green Flame housed within could be a weapon in the upcoming war.
Rex Stark had put his Hour long Miraclo formula on the back burner when he was asked to investigate the lantern and green flame for tactical usage.  Stark had begun to decide that chemistry wasn’t the way to go, and had planned to turn his mind toward weaponry.  However, he was inspired by the green flame to do two things.  One, to expose a recipient of Miraclo to the flame in an attempt to make the effects permanent, and two, to craft a technological ring that would allow the wearer to control the flame with his ego for certain effects.
While he was working on this plan, the call went out for volunteers. These volunteers, it was hoped, would be the first in a long line of super soldiers powered by the green flame.  While most of the army chose volunteers who were the fittest and most likely of candidates, Rex and his team were convinced such power had to be given to someone who deserved it… who could be trusted with it.  To this end, they chose Alan Rogers.
After a series of tests, physical, mental, and moral, PFC Rogers was selected to PFC Rogers was selected to be the first (official) test subject for the process.  Alan was injected with Miraclo to prepare his body for the flame, then exposed to concentrated bursts of the green flame.  The process worked, and Alan’s first act as the Green Sentinel was to save Rex Stark from a fifth columnist assassination attempt.
Unfortunately, the process failed to create any other super soldiers, as proximity to the green flame was a necessity in maintaining the power.  The human Americans simply lacked the understanding of the green power that would allow them to recreate lanterns or replicated the flame contained therein.  The origins of the Green Flame wouldn’t be understood on Earth until years later when Hal Rider was selected to be a Green Nova.
Although the process was a success otherwise, there was one drawback. Rex Stark’s formula continued to have a time limit.  This time it was 24 hours, and Alan has to recharge his ring (and himself) with his lantern every 24 hours or be powerless. The upside is, with the mystic flame as catalyst, as long as Rogers recharges, there is never any drop off, and never any need to be powerless before he can be powered again (like the original miraclo formula could only be used once every 24 hours.)  Even if he fails for some reason to recharge within 24 hours, once he has access to his lantern again, he can immediately recharge.
Nevertheless, in World War 2, Alan Rogers became a hero, at first fighting Fifth Columnists at home, then proving the power of the flame and his moral and mental steadfastness to be able to withstand the Spear of Destiny’s influence over Europe.  When he led a group of normal soldiers (Howling Company led by Sgt Nick “Fury” Rock) into a Sons of the Kobra stronghold where they were able to neutralize the artifact. This allowed allied super powered beings to enter into the European theater of the war.
Near the end of the war, Alan Rogers (and several of the Justice Invaders) are tricked by Glorious Loki into a seemingly endless Ragnarök simulation they could not escape from. Glorious Loki had sought to help his ally Brother Zemo (VII) destroy New York and Washington DC near the end of the war.  Although many of the JI were trapped by Loki, the Spectral Torch managed to stop the plan, banish Glorious Loki to where he came from, and kill Brother Zemo… But the Green Sentinel and his allies were lost to the world for many many years.
The Justice Invaders were later rescued by agents of A.E.G.I.S. when they were able to pierce the Mists of Time at the edge of Skartaris, the Savaged Land and bring the heroes back.  Exhausted by the seemingly endless simulation, many of the JI retired.

 Meta-Backstory

Well, with Guy Walker, the GN Agent I created a bit of Green Flame/Green Nova lore… and I reserve the right to make some changes as I go along.  Heh.  Mostly, I just never liked Captain Lantern as the name of the first wielder of the Green Flame... it was always meant to be a placeholder.  I like Green Sentinel, although it does lean heavily in Alan Scott’s favor.  Green cause… that’s the power source.  Sentinel cause Captain America is frequently called the Sentinel of Liberty, while Alan Scott once went by the heroic name of Sentinel.  This synergy couldn’t be ignored.  A friend suggested I keep “Captain of the Lantern” and I figured it could be a nickname or title (much like Sentinel of Liberty or Man of Steel, Dark Knight, et. al.)
When I wrote up the GN Agent, I created Rex Stark as the scientist in the Golden Age that performed the Green Flame experiments. I wasn’t sure about that amalgam, but a friend of mine simply said “Well, Rex’ involvement is clearly why there is a time limit on the ring,” and “Bam!” I was sold.  I thought was was brilliant and so easy to work into the story.
Both Alan Scott and Steve Rogers had “disappear at the end of the war” stories (even if I’m not sure about the Ragnarök simulation’s canon nature in DC anymore, so I tried to work something together that combined those two.
