Description
Black Knight + Shining Knight
Sir Justin of Scandia was a knight in King Arthur’s legendary Round Table. A new, young knight, Sir Justin quickly became a favorite in the court and a favorite of Merlyn. When a meteorite fell near Camelot, Merlyn took the unusual black metal within and had a sword forged for Sir Justin. The Obsidian Sword was a magical construct, able to cut nearly anything including mystical barriers, absorb all forms of energy and bypass intangibility. It also has the cursed ability to absorb souls to make itself more powerful, and all the souls gave the sword a blood curse. Merlyn also gifted Sir Justin a winged horse named Winged Valinor.
Sir Justin was a frequent enemy of Mordred the Evil and Morgaine Le Fey.
Justin was killed at Castle Scandia by Mordred during the fall of Camelot. Mordred then died from wounds he had suffered from King Arthur earlier in the day at Camlann. Merlyn cast a spell over Sir Justin, ensuring that he would return if Morgaine or Mordred ever returned.
Later, a descendant of Sir Justin, Natalie Arkham discovered the tomb of Sir Justin and the Obsidian Sword. She had been raised in the Asylum run by her father, and somehow believed the Knighthawk was a villain that she needed to oppose as a way of dealing with her terror of him, a terror she learned from watching the warrior and listening to the inmates talk about him. She fashioned herself a knight costume and worked with a technological wizard that was once imprisoned in the asylum to make medieval styled weapons, and a genetic engineer to create for her a winged horse that she promised to use to dispatch the Knighthawk. She was mortally injured during a battle with Knighthawk and Warhawk when she fell from her winged horse.
Her cousin, Justin Whitman was nearby. He had hoped to help her shake her psychosis, knowing that she was acting the villain, though she believed she was valorious. In the end, in a moment of clarity, she confessed that she realized her actions were wrong, and asked Justin to reclaim the name Obsidian Knight. Justin never wanted the sword, but during the process of studying the weapon, he brought back from exile two villains that had been thought to be dispatched. To aid the heroes in fighting them, he took on the mantle of the Obsidion Knight and with the winged horse he named Valinor (after his ancestor and name-sake’s winged horse of legend) he sought to aid the Justice League Avengers in defeating the villains. After a misunderstanding, he did just that, and earned the heroes’ thanks.
The New Obsidian Knight was shunted to the past during a battle in which he aided the Justice League Avengers against Kang, the Time Conqueror. During World War 2, he joined the Seven Soldiers of Liberty. He eventually fought with the Justice Invaders against Glorious Loki and his Frost Giants. Like many of the Justice Invaders, he was drawn into the Mists of Time and the Endless war against the Fear Gods. When the Justice Invaders escaped, the Obsidian Knight ended up in Skartaris. He had fled the other Invaders after he had given in to the curse of his ebony blade and slew several of their enemies. He kills King Zaltin Tar and establishes New Avalon and builds an army. He intends the army to aid him in his fight against the Justice League Avengers. He expects the JLA to arrive and bring him in for his crimes.
He fears for his sanity, for, in Skartaris, he begins to be visited by his ancestor Sir Justin of Scandia. Sir Justin is a ghost in Skartaris, for Morgaine Le Fey lives there and the spell from Merlyn brought him back. However, he has no body to fight the sorceress with until his descendant walks out of the mist. Eventually, the JLA do arrive, though they have no thoughts of attacking Justin. In fact, they didn’t even know he was still alive, having not seen him since the battle with Kang. Justin Whitman attempts to organize armies to fight them, but the JLA are allied with the Warlord, Ka-Mandi, and few would chose to fight him. Justin of Scandia possesses his descendant to take over the body and explains himself to the JLA. He seeks their aid in defeating Morgaine Le Fey. After the battle, Cold Spell and Abby Kane use their magic to remove the curse of the Ebon Blade, freeing Justin Whitman from his curse and insanity. Sir Justin of Scandia leaves his descendant, and Justin Whitman decides to stay in Skartaris to rule New Avalon and guard against Morgaine Le Fey from rising in power again.
Meta Backstory:
Well, once I included Morgaine in the background of Man Swamp, there became a desire to create another Arthurian Character. Obviously, both Marvel and DC have knight characters from King Arthur’s time. The Black Knight and the Shining Knight became the Obsidian Knight, cause Obsidian is Black AND Shiny. I hammered together the backstory, and it was harder than I had thought, since Sir Justin survived and time travelled and was the original, while Dane Whitman was a descendent of Sir Percy of Scandia. I decided to got with the descendant idea of the Black Knight, and then had to create a villainous Obsidian Knight in between. I settled on Arkham Knight to amalgam with the Nathan Garrett Black Knight. This means eventually I need to amalgam Arkham and Ravencroft asylums. I looked at amalgams from and but went my own way for the most part, but thank you guys for your ideas (rechecking I was pretty close to moonknightfan101's version...just a few changes there). I also really wanted to work in the Shining Knight’s amnesia and partnership with Star-Girl. I was really liking an amalgam with Lightspeed (Julie Power) and Courtney Whitmore… but realized I couldn’t separate the Power Pack like that, and eventually just gave up, as I need to get Justin to Skartaris anyway.
Amalgams in the story:
Sir Justin of Scandia (Sir Justin/Shining Knight + Sir Percy of Scandia/Black Knight)
Merlyn (Merlin + Merlyn of Otherworld)
Mordred (Mordred and Mordred)
Morgaine Le Fey (Morgaine Le Fey + Morgan Le Fey)
Winged Valinor (Winged Victory + Valinor … Valinor was Black Knight’s winged horse in Otherworld… and doesn’t have the LoTR connotations of Aragorn)
Knighthawk (Batman + Hawkeye)
Warhawk (Hawkman + War Machine)
Natalie Arkham/Obsidian Knight (Nathan Garrett/ Black Knight + Astrid Arkham/Arkham Knight)
Justin Whitman/ Obsidian Knight (Shining Knight + Black Knight/Dane Whitman)
Kang, the Time Conqueror (Kang + Time Trapper)
Seven Soldiers of Liberty (Seven Soldiers of Victory + Liberty Legion… but as always, not necessarily a one to one amalgam, but the Seven Soldiers of Victory + World war 2 Marvel Heroes that best fit)
Justice Invaders (Justice Society + Invaders)
Glorious Loki (Loki + Glorious Godfrey)
Ka-Mandi (Warlord + Ka-Zar + Kamandi the Last Boy)
Cold Spell (Scarlet Witch + Ice)
Abby Kane (Abigail Arcane Cable + Jennifer Kale)
it's been a few of these posts that had so many other amalgams in the story... fun!
