Description This was taken in Little Cottonwood Canyon near SLC, Utah.

As you can the area has received more snow that it has in decades, and the snow effects almost every living thing inhabiting the area.

For us, the commute to work is slowed and is more dangerous, while animals like deer and elk are fighting for their lives trying to find enough food under the enormous amount of snow.

What drew me to this small exposed section of the stream was the texture of the deep snow piled high above. The texture was created by the recent storm along with gravity pulling loose snow down into the stream. Also the shape of the rocks created some nice lines through the image.

Full view helps.

It's really easy to imagine this as an image from a fantasy novel. It's actually making me think of images I envisioned while reading "The Dragonbone Chair" by Tad Williams. It's beautifully quiet.

Thanks a lot, I've never read it but images always remind me of books and movies.

Especially the movies in your head, eh? :0) That's what I love so much about art, how it can transport you anywhere, particularly places that don't exist.

Yep, especially the ones in my head. We all connect to art in an indivudual way, good times.

I don't know if you like the epic fantasy genre, but I highly recommend Tad Williams as an author and his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy in particular (The Dragonbone Chair is the first of 3). It's added quite a lot of stunning imagery to the movies in my head.

Thanks for the lovely conversation.

No thank you for the lovely conversation. More of a non-fiction fan myself, sometimes the truth is more unbelievable than fantasy.

My favorite book of all-time= Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer

Ah. While I will agree you have a very valid point about the truth, it sounds far too grown up and mature for me. I may, however, look up your favorite book there and see what that's all about. I love to read so I'm always glad to pick up a recommendation here and there.

Very nice shot! I miss that place, just moved out of the area last summer. Used to live 5 minutes from the canyon.

Thanks for the great shot, brought a tear to my eye! (a good one )

5 minutes from the canyon? Prime real estate up there, I love the Wasatch mountains, so much to do up there. I love to snowshoe because the trails are almost always completely empty, some true "Solitude" up there. I'm glad it was a good tear though.

Just so you know, the deer and elk are not struggling to survive because of snow. In winter months deer and elk eat bark off of tree and things like that rather than leaves and such. Deer and elk have evolved to live in conditions like that.

tourofnature In reply to OrangeKiwi [2008-02-20 15:53:50 +0000 UTC]

Sure they have evolved to adapt to normal winter conditions but this winter is way beyond what they're designed to do. Check out this article, it should give you an idea how much snow we've got this winter.

look i went to college for wildlife. I live in an area that averages 420 inches of snow a year. I am also an avid hunter and conservationist who volunteered for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, West Virginia Deer Hunters Association and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Deer and elk are fine in weather like that. The only think that is making them starve now is over population.

tourofnature In reply to OrangeKiwi [2008-02-21 02:03:42 +0000 UTC]

Hey take it easy, I don't think volunteering for the West Virginia Deer Hunters Association or the Maryland Department of Natural Resources qualifies you to understand much about the snowy winters we get out here in Utah and Wyoming and how those effect the Mule Deer (not Whitetail) out here, I have lived in Wyoming and Utah my entire life and have seen the effect on the population that severe winter's like this year have on Deer especially.

For this one, I'll trust the opinion of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources on how the snow where I live is effecting the wildlife in the area.

Seeing that I lived in Montana for four years I'm pretty sure I have seen how snow affects mule deer? Or because I have hunted in Wyoming during winter and therefore have no idea how winter affects mule deer? I worked on a ranch in Montana, during winter, but I guess I wouldnt have seen anything their either. Right I have NO idea what I am talking about

tourofnature In reply to OrangeKiwi [2008-02-22 20:41:50 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure you do, Montana is a cool state and I know you get a lot of snow out there too.

I've hunted in Wyoming as well, but never in the winter, Deer season ends on October 15, and Elk season ends November 1, beyond that there is no hunting in winter because its too taxing on the animals.

I was just saying that the deer and elk are having a hard time this winter and according to the experts we've already lost a large portion of the population of fawns to starvation.

Have a good weekend.
