Description This was taken in Little Cottonwood Canyon near SLC, Utah.

As you can the area has received more snow that it has in decades, and the snow effects almost every living thing inhabiting the area.

For us, the commute to work is slowed and is more dangerous, while animals like deer and elk are fighting for their lives trying to find enough food under the enormous amount of snow.

What drew me to this small exposed section of the stream was the texture of the deep snow piled high above. The texture was created by the recent storm along with gravity pulling loose snow down into the stream. Also the shape of the rocks created some nice lines through the image.

Full view helps.

This is beautiful. I love the texture of the snow but what caught my eye was the contrasting rush of water and the stillness of the snow. The rocks add that little something, the lines you mentioned and the bit of color that pops.

I liked the same things, the water shows motion, but the snow seems like its been there forever.

Painters spend lifetimes trying to capture the essence of subtly complex simplicity of this image, and you've done it with the simple closing of a shutter. This is sublime.

Now that's a comment, just a bit deeper and more specific than the typical "wow, that's pretty" comments. Thanks a lot and I'm really glad you liked the image. I had a great time creating it so to have it viewed by so many is an extra bonus. Enjoy your day.

What a nice shot!
did you do somthing with the water? (photoshop?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tourofnature In reply to maayanzlo [2008-02-20 21:42:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot, no photoshop on the water. The effect was accomplished by using a long exposure. Maybe 5 seconds, so the camera recorded the flowing water for 5 seconds. For these type of shots a tripod is vital. They're can be a lot of fun.

Utah has been crazy this Winter eh? I live up in Ogden, we're feeling the snow as well. At least it's calmed down a bit for now.

Yeah, more snow this year than I can ever remember. I've never been more ready for spring. I heard we're supposed to have a big storm coming in this weekend.

It's so crazy! Last year was my first year here, and I was all like, "Oh this is mild, I can deal with this." Needless to say, I was a bit surprised.

But that's good it's gonna snow this weekend, because we definitely need more snow.

What a stunningly beautiful winter photo. The colors are natural...framing is dead on perfect...and the detail in the snow is amazingly clear (which can be hard to accomplish). Bravo on a job well done!
