Description
Well someone wrote me a note and used the word "Weeaboo". Now as it happened I have never come across that word before and so I GOOGLED it, and to cut a long story short this was the result of my 'research' ...Credits are in the panel.

alright, i found this post and said hey this is interesting and Miku is on this shit! I like anime but I dont read the manga cause its expensive besides the works otaku, kawaii, desu? Is in fact extremely annoying and very very childish in my opinion the only word i will say is baka cause i know what it means. I make my own characters and stuff (anime style like and with furry) even my own fictional world and stuff (is that considered a weeaboo behavior?). I also love some anime merch here and there but thats it (body pillows is one Ill never get its weird and disturbing, and sheets is another and weeaboo bullshit) I nearly went into a sorta weeaboo stage but went out of it very quickly cause this is reality and shit not a fictional world. This post is very helpful and also im in fact learning some Japanese and stuff because I discovered that i had a close relative that is Japanese! Also I adore pocky sticks (strawberry mostly) and i really will love to own some kimonos and a cheongsam (is that how you spell it? hold up. . . yep im right! ) thats it, because they are gorgeous traditional outfits!Β
(please state if im a weeaboo or not? Im worried now o-o)Β

1. I am probably going to take a Japanese language course sometime to learn the language. I have been practicing phonetics, but i don't really say stuff like "Kawaii!" well, other than "Baka" at most times but that's it.
2. I don't really care about "waifus", I do have Miku as my imaginary friend, but we're just friends. Not in love or anything. I do have real friends though.
3. This just doesn't apply to anime characters, but to also characters from non-anime fandoms and such. Not to mention games, shippings...that's why i tend to stay away from fanbases.
4. Well, this one is a mixed bag, I was planning on trying to learn how to import models of other games into MMD so i can make them into photoshoots and such but ya know...
5. I do care for things other than anime, like my education and such.Β
6. Well, i may wear cat ears as a joke one day but i don't really consider it "cosplay" and i never will.
7. Stereotypical anime characters tend to get into extreme situations while some have depth and backstories. Yes, i do have long hair, but i don't really tend to look like a "shota" at times. It's just a natural style.
8. I don't really read mangas or watch animes, but i do tend to read some MMD comics (Including some of yours) when i'm bored along with some normal television entertainment.
9. This one is like 7. Sure, i live in a country where cars drive on the left like Japan but i also tend to look at European countries and cities.
10. Again, it's like 8. I do play Japanese games mostly, but i care for other things like western animated shows.
Those are my views. Yes, i can take opinions.

I get tired of people calling me a Weaboo, all just because I use the anime esque as how I draw. The reason is because I simply like it. There shouldn't be anything wrong with that. And there's nothing wrong with learning about the culture either. But I don't go around making Mary Sue characters for fan fictions of already existing things, live in a world where life is an anime, and I certainly DO NOT mix English and Japanese words in incoherent matters ("OMG!!! SO KAWAII!!! DESU KORO!!!"), yet people claim otherwise without any evidence. I have a few friends who are actually from Japan and they like my art. I do find some positives within the United States, which is my country that I live. I don't diss on it, all just because it's not Japan. All countries have their own unique culture and people.
English is my native language, but I also speak Italian a bit, since that's my nationality. Japanese is something I studied for a long time and I'm trying to fluently learn it. I am Italian-American and I already am aware that I am not Japanese at all, nor do I pose to be one. Otakus are not good things either, because that's a very negative connotation. That means you seriously love it for everything, involving the place.
Also, people need to stop throwing that word around and use it as a scapegoat all just because they don't like Anime and Manga.

For me Weeaboos are people who are unhealthy crazy about anime, and they're flaming everyone who say that Anime is a Chinese Cartoon.
Just this ^^
Welp, I like using japanese words in the internet and real life, because I just like how they sound, that's all. My cousin is an Otaku, so she likes using them too, wah, we're learning Japanese together.Β
I'm not an Otaku, I just like Anime and Vocaloid. Nothing more. I'm not crazy about it, I can live without it.
Acting like an Anime character? I don't know how to do it, so there you go
Aand, I have a selfie, just because I wanted to, not because I need it, I did it just for fun
I don't know if I'm a Weeaboo or not, I don't care about it~
But this ,,tutorial" thing is really cool, you should make more things like this
π: 0 β©: 1
Trackdancer In reply to KaasuP [2014-10-26 22:15:02 +0000 UTC]
I've never seen a Chinese anime. I'm sure that there must be some. Would be interesting to see what they are like.
You learn a language by using it - so no issues there. The point alluded to here is when people use it just for 'effect' and then it sounds stupid.
Otaku - not me. I watch an anime now and then but never read mangas. I really like Japanese food though.
Acting like an anime character - I'm like you and wouldn't even want to try.
Selfie - nah not my thing. No problems really with others doing it but I do think it's rather silly.
This is not a 'tutorial', just a satire. Not in the business of telling people what they can and cannot do with their time/life - but that doesn't mean I can't poke fun at them if they're acting 'weird'. ^^

Well all right then. Not sure how welcomed my opinion is here (not a weeaboo but still), I'll leave it I guess.
First of all, while I do agree with this, I think it could have been worded a bit more carefully.
Personally I don't see why anyone should lie about where they are from, but I've always seen it more as a psychological issue to be honest (Maybe because I had the same problem many times and my psychological state is most certainly not the best)
Now of course I am sure many people think I'm a weeaboo but that is so far from the truth. Only thing I can relate to is wanting to be somewhere else and it isn't Japan. It's with the best friend I've ever had.
I've tried seeing why people lie where they are from... and I can't. I can see if you are distressed and seeking comfort, but I still find it inappropriate. I've done this before so many times.
Now just a disclaimer, I have stopped lying about my location and developing random identities. I still unconciously "switch" between said identities, but I'm trying to remain as honest as possible, and even if not, I've went in favour of going anonymous. The paragraph below is pretty useful I think.Β
*further disclaimer, when I say I switch between identities, now it really only refers to typing/speaking/writing style. For the most part however, it's all just been combined together.
In my strong opinion, if where you are from bothers you so much (or you just don't want anyone knowing for whatever reason) you should just set it to Unknown in settings. Many other sites and programs have a feature similar to this. I have mine set to Unknown. Even then, probably shouldn't claim to be from anywhere else than you are. Just say "I'd rather not talk about Β where I'm from" or something. If someone starts calling you as if you are from a place you aren't, you should correct them I believe (you don't have to give out your location to do so). I've had so much comments on my location actually, I just started to ignore it. I don't see the fascination in wanting to know where someone's from, if they want to share it they will. Mine is most likely a psychological issue... I can't be sure, as I have no one to talk to about it. I just know I was seeking comfort, and very strangely, that's how I do (and still) get it. Certain other languages and countries, though not so strange considering the important people in my life. Either way, if you feel a desire to develop identities (and especially in many other countries, even greater importance if there is a deep reason behind it) I'd highly recommend to talk to a doctor about it, I'm sure they can help you decide if it needs to be monitered or you'll "grow out of it".
I'm going to copy-paste one of my comments from yesterday... it was a screenshot of a guy saying he learned Japanese or something from subtitles.
"... I'm kind of upset nowΒ (γ-γ)
I may get hate for this but here goes. =/
not as strong points :
1. otaku is considered an insult in Japan, though that isn't the main problem or point of discussion, and can be easily ignored.
2. "otakus" isn't correct, but again, that can easily be ignored. The plural would still be, "otaku"
strong points :
I hate when people do this, and with any language. (Another example are the complete Hetalia addicts that think they've learned Russian by hearing Russia say "da" and such, then proceed to use google translate that is very obviously broken)
Seriously, I find it very offensive and disrespectful to whatever language it is.Β
For my languages? Yes I'll admit I loved Japanese from anime at an early age. But what did I do? Simple, I went to the library and got a book for it. I realised that I wasn't going to get a full Japanese education from anime, manga, or google translate. I still don't have a full Japanese education. I need to use google translate to read some kanji's romaji.Β
Besides, in anime, "arigatou!" is used, but if you do that in real life with a person you don't know, that's considered quite rude. "Arigatou gozaimasu" is polite, though someone has already pointed out the informal/formal issue.
A Russian friend of mine has also stated that she finds all of this disrespectful to the language (She is very good in Russian, Japanese and English).Β
I love subtitles too, I prefer them over anything else (even in my language), but it doesn't automatically make you a genius.Β
Personally I'd love to see if they could understand all anime raw xD
I would say or sent to an all Japanese website or something, but that doesn't always prove fluency. I can navigate just about anything, so not a good way to prove if you can understand or not.Β
I also just hate when you try to correct someone, and then they insult your English saying that you "don't have the right to judge their language"
Ah well, just a view from a person who have always loved languages.
Thanks to anyone who has read that."
Those are my opinions. I hope you can see the point.
Anyways, commenting on the panels now in a Β TL;DR and concluding version :
1. Really, don't. And please don't use broken google translate either.
2. Not much to say about this other than it is useful advice.
3. Agreed, never understood that.
4. Honestly, I don't care about this one. I feel they can do it but they shouldn't go around just asking random MMDers.
5. Well said, there really is. You should focus on what's around you, your life will benefit greatly than knowing every Pokemon episode title or whatever.
6. Eh, this isn't a huge problem for me. Just the part when they go around in work/school like that. If they do that in their house however, I think it's fine.
7. Thank you, so many people forget this. Trying to be someone you're not can honestly (not even joking) lead you into insanity.
8. Yes. Please. This is the most important advice ever. Not to mention it can chase away any true potential friendships or even lovers.
9. I honestly don't care unless they are saying "I'm from Japan". I don't mind someone commenting on views of Japan, saying anything about the country, etc in an "unknown" way. I just don't like when they say they are from Japan and then proceed to act horribly. Note: I am obviously not from Japan. If you just wish to hide your location in general, "unknown" button is what you should do.
10. Going back into my previous comment, otaku is pretty much an insult in Japan. I'd refrain from Β using that word to describe yourself (or anyone) all together.Β
I hope that was an okay comment, and I'm sure it's very long. Also please note that if you can't understand something I said please skip it. And if you don't like something I said comment carefully, thanks.
I do know what I am talking about, I have and have had a variety of friends. Also, while I may not be close with any Japanese people, I do play on a Japanese MMORPG (which does mean that the majority are Japanese and don't use English)
I'm going to note you about something btw.

You should have read Miku's disclaimer more carefully before you wrote this. It's obvious that either you didn't or you failed to understand what she said. So let me just reiterate some of it here:
1. The foundation of this comic is based on an article written on wikiHOW and the bullet points were borrowed from that article verbatim.
2. This is a comic, and a minor social commentary. It's meant to poke fun at the subject, not preach on it. Some of Miku's comments and especially her poses should have been a big clue that this was never meant to be a serious discussion on the topic.
3. The use of the word 'otaku' and the plural 'otakus' is correct because I'm writing in English not Japanese. And this is not just my POV, Google it.
4. When Miku said that our opinion is just worth two cents, she means it. We really don't care if people want to become Weeaboos or not. It's a free world and people can do whatever they want to enjoy their freedom so long as it doesn't harm others. And yes, in my books that means that they are free to do 'stupid' things too if that's what makes them happy.
5. As for the Japanese, some of my relatives are Japanese so I am fairly familiar with the true customs of that nation, perhaps more so than most foreign adherents of anime and their associated sub-cultures.
My main point being is that it's OK for us to laugh at ourselves and may be poke some fun at others because we find their behaviours odd, but in doing works like these I am not really preaching anything or arguing against anything. I might poke some holes at the logic behind a set of cultural mores or belief system so often all these works are, are just an exercise in semantics. You need to recognize satire for what it is, and this work falls definitely into that category. It's not meant to change anyone's behaviour patterns and most of the points here that were raised do have valid counter arguments.
Cheers.

So, let me check myself steb by step:
1) - Never even tried speaking Japanese;
2) - Don't have waifus, though either Miku's comment or "know to tell fact from fiction" is a little off context imo;
3) - I don't
4) - I use APH Russia to impersonate me in MMD videos, does that count? I'd actually make a MMD-selfie, if I knew how to model properly from scratch.
5) - Stoner-doom metal, fuck yeah!
6) - Don't have any, and I never cosplayed.
7) - I guess I'm still myself
8) - Darn, I'm a Touhou fan.
9) - EASTERN EUROPE, MOTHERFUCKERS!
10) - TBH, the more I learn Japanese culture, the more Slavophile I feel 0_o Seriously, "living for working", not "working for living" is something that I cannot understand. That's also why I prefer fantasy/fantastic animes over "slice of life" genre.

Trackdancer In reply to MasterOfHelium [2014-10-21 21:17:06 +0000 UTC]
In response to your points.
2) Yeah it's kind of out of context.
4) I don't personally have a problem with the idea of inserting a projection of oneself into a work of fiction, as long as it's done in a 'healthy' manner.
8) Nothing wrong with being a fan of a particular genre of anime, as long as it doesn't become an obsession.

one exception on the first rule, i just got back from japan (i went with a school group, we're studying japanese) if you go to japan and know a bit of japanese then use it. but only if you actually can pronounce it, because there's this boy that went with us and even though he is, i'm guessing a "weeabo" he still pronounces almost every word wrong and it is so infuriating.

Also, #3 seems less like a guideline of how not to be a Weeaboo and more like general guidelines on how not to be a dickhead fanboy.
