Description I was asked how to do color holds (coloring the black lines) so I thought I'd do a quick tutorial. There are quite a few different ways to do color holds, this is just how I do it.

If anything is unclear let me know and I'll try and clarify.

Is there a trick to picking what color to use as the line color? Do you use the base color and then make it 20% darker, etc. or is it just whatever looks good to you? I understand the technique (and I've done it before), but I have a hard time trying to choose how dark/contrast the lines from the interior colors. Thanks.

Yeah, it's pretty much just that. Picking the darkest shadow color of each area after you're doing coloring it and using that - or even going a little bit darker than that - and using that as your color holds color.

hahah No problem, hun. It's important to pass on the art tips and tricks!  I've had plenty of artists help me out with advice and teaching me their techniques, so I definitely don't want to hesitate to pass it forward and show other artists what I, myself, have learned through trial and error.

wonderful! thanks for showing us that little secret! strange how artists want to just keep secrets these days.. it is like their lives were depending on such things.

Yeah, sadly there are a lot of artists who are afraid to share their secrets. Or some kind of with the mentality of "well this is my technique that I had to discover myself, why should I share it with others", but I think it's important to share these techniques with other artists. I've had a lot of artists over the years have the kindness to share their secrets, so I'd be really selfish, imo, to not share mine.
