Description
Jirass
Intro: Blue Lake is a crater lake located in South Australia. It is noted for its seasonal color changes that turn its waters a vibrant blue. Widely believed to be caused by calcium carbonite microcrystal formations or by planktonic life cycles, this land mark also caught the attention of FATHOM in the late 60s when anomalous seismic activity was detected near its vicinity. Eyewitness accounts and folklore of mysterious lights occasionally seen within the lake prompted an official investigation. A planned seismic survey was scrapped after the Skull Island Incident of 1973, fearing that such tests may awaken any possible dormant kaiju in the area. Aside from the rare lights, no further activity was reported by the small survey station posted in the area for many years. Until of course, the new age of monsters began…
Story: When the living continent of Mu rose to the surface after millennia of dormancy, it sparked a worldwide migration of various kaiju towards itself. Among these ancient beasts was the theropod-like frilled monster designated “Jirass”. Rising from the water of Blue Lake, the creature caused significant damage to the small local town she passed through on her way to the sea. Before she got too far, the Australian Navy attempted to corral her near the shore to make her an easier target, but Jirass only disappeared into an undersea cavern. She reappeared near Sydney, where this time she managed to escape into the open sea.
Upon reaching Mu, Jirass, like many other kaiju, was quick to secure and establish a territory for herself upon the massive superorganism’s surface. In defense of her patch, she clashed briefly with the arriving Zilla, and again with Yongary. Whenever she briefly left her nesting site, she was observed diving beneath the underside of Mu to forage for parasitic Ganimes. Unfortunately for her, there would come an enemy which could not be intimidated. She would be among those Godzilla considered prey upon his arrival, and was quickly killed and consumed in defense of her nest. Only parts of her frill were discarded.
Abilities: Despite her size, Jirass was a lightly built and agile kaiju. Although possibly sharing a common ancestor with basal neotheropods, like the Dilophosauridae, Jirass demonstrated excellent swimming abilities and even a limited capacity for underwater respiration. Her frill was in fact a highly complex structure that included layers of tightly-packed subcutaneous blood vessel and sponge-like airway networks that enabled the many folds to function as gills. Also embedded within the frill’s tissues, as well as across much of her body, were a variety of symbiotic bacterial colonies. These colonies likely also played a role in nutrient absorption and respiration during periods of dormancy. Many of their own byproducts were highly toxic, making Jirass’ flesh unpalatable to most other creatures. Contact with human skin often resulted in rash outbreaks similar to poison ivy.
Jirass’ most potent defense and offense was her ability to concentrate her body’s toxic compounds within modified salivatory glands, which spit out as a projectile attack. This venomous fluid could be projected with great accuracy and speed as a spray, a stream, or blob depending on the targeted threat or prey. Additionally, she was able to charge her venom-fluid with her body’s bioelectricity, creating a “poison taser” effect that would short out most machinery and stun similarly sized and smaller kaiju.
Character: Although Jirass is thus far the only observed mature member of her species, it has been speculated that her kind are prone to seeking out and inhabiting volcanic lakes, where they may absorb leftover radioactive materials brought up from past eruptions during long periods of dormancy. Frequency of active states is unknown, though due to her bright coloration some have considered her as a possible source for the Aboriginal myths of the Rainbow Serpent. Indeed, Jirass is an elusive kaiju that prefers to be left alone. When confronted, she would put great effort into intimidation displays in hopes of driving away opponents. There was little to no distinction between actual threats and bluffs, making her strikes unpredictable.
Although Jirass herself is gone, it seems her progeny has survived. Recent surveys stationed at Mu have reported the southern parts of the living island are stalked by human-sized hatchings of a brood of possibly a few hundred. Already coated in poisonous scales, likely due to residual bacteria from their mother’s frill, these hatchlings pose a considerable safety hazard in light of their rapidly developing spitting abilities, making full-body suits and goggles mandatory for further Mu explorations. As Mu gradually moves into the Pacific, shoals of them have been seen leaving their birthplace heading towards Skull Island, though the possibility of them slipping away to other volcanic lakes around the world is also a concern.

hey Transapient, have you thought of doing the Gargantuas Gaira and Sanda for the second KR season?, maybe it could work without the Frankenstein backstory, imagine them to be giant monster monkeys, Gaira could be a Gelada with grass-like fur while Sanda could be a Mandrill with a light-brown fur coloration including the red & blue faces of mandrills, the Gargantuas are underrated.
then there is one extremely underrated Kaiju with a lot of potential that needs to be part of KR, the one-time Gabara from All Monsters Attack, he looked too generic in appearance but the idea of a dream toad kaiju was unique (it was actually based on toads), imagine Gabara as a monstrous toad with surreal colors, with saber teeth including "lips" similar to the Thylacosmilus, and a nightmarish tongue, he would still keep his horn that shoots electricity, but it would be of a psycho-electric variation that causes hallucinogenic seizures on even larger Kaiju, plus he could emit a field that generates dream-like illusions, it would come from Australia.

Given his fondness of monster movies. I have little doubt the Frankenstein connection will be staying.

maybe, since KR has no need for artificial man-made Kaijus.

I've noticed it just now, but Jirass and Zilla morphology is pretty similar. Are they, like, related in some way? Like a Subspecies or something?

Not gonna lie I prefer your version of Jirass with her more dillophosaur like shape compare to the one that looks like Godzilla with a frill. Really looking forward to seeing how the story of this amazing world you have created continues and any more amazing re designs you make. Also slight question have you thought about making your version of the other Titan's we didn't see in King Of The Monsters but using there names as a foundation for them?

Thank you. Glad you like my work.
And I think Im going to hold off on unseen, name-only Titans for now, in case we ever get some official description or reveal.

other than the JP Dilophosaurus inspiration, what other features did you base Jirass on?, i notice the blue color of the tongue reminding me of the blue-tongued skink.
one hilarious fact is that in the Latin American dub of the Ultraman episode where the original Jirass was featured, the creature was instead referred as Godzilla, hence the obvious similarities.

Nice catch, I did indeed refer to skinks and other lizards to blend with more theropod traits.
And that doesnt really surprise me... XD

Gonna be honest, I wasn't expecting you to turn Jirass into a giant Dilo. Was imaging it moreso like the Jirass design SpeculaTimsauru5 made.
Either way she looks pretty good.

Thanks. I actually had another sketch of her that I ended up discarding since I felt it was too similar to a JP Dilo.

, Jirass? more like Jirassic park.
nice job. also, is she part flora-fauna? and are you talking about Orga? or is there a different kanji that i’m unaware if called ogra?

The similarities are quite interesting, coincidental or not.
And I suppose she's advanced enough to be partially florafauna. And Ogra (not to be confused with Orga) is Gorgo's mother in his titular movie.

I believe one of the kaiju that went unseen in GKOTM was designated Bunyip, and was set in Australia. I mean, after seeing that movie eight times in theaters I'm pretty certain that's the name that shows up on the Australian blip. Also, the canceled sequel to Godzilla 1998 would've been set primarily in Australia in the first and second acts. I also remember a short story that featured a kaiju Echidna...

Yes I had heard about Bunyip, I hope it shows up in a graphic novel or something. I had he4ard about GINO2 being in Sydney too, he ended up there for Final Wars anyhow.

Bokrug? I mean, Australia isn't exactly the land of Mnar and I don't think there was mention of the city of Ib, so I don't see how (Rereads "The Doom That Came to Sarnath")...oh, you mean the lights, right? Well admittedly it wasn't intentional, but that's a good comparison.

Aside from the obvious Dilophosaurus similarities, I do love how the frills evoke a floral or perhaps lepidopteran image. She really does look like a tropical plant. And it's appropriate that the frilled reptile kaiju emerges from Australia.
