I'm still a neophyte with their material too, since it's tricky to get ahold of. But it's worth the effort!

I'd go for the trades, but I hear they're missing many issues for expired copyright etc. reasons. :/

I suppose you cannot find the Titan Books reprints from UK... they are pretty complete!

I haven't seen any Titan stuff here.
Sucks because I think Titan itself even has a small comic of its own... and what I've seen on TFWiki looks really good!

I'm not exactly sure what's available and what's not. Whatever you can pick up though is worth the read.

Some very nice acting work here, Seb.
My only piece of (hopefully) constructive criticism would be for J.Z.:
In my opinion, any two Autobots could have been dropped into this scene and it wouldn't make a difference. What character elements can you evoke that are unique to Grimlock and Sludge when placed under these fairly common circumstances? Just a challenge for next time...

JZLobo In reply to JediFlaherty [2010-08-06 22:25:19 +0000 UTC]
This isn't just a moment that any character can be wedged in to, this is a character study on Sludge specifically and how he has a tendency to bond with aliens in his search for friendship. I really find that endearing about his character. As for Grimlock's presense, well, he's Sludge's commander, and he's an a-hole.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I struggle to find something unique about Sludge's "voice". He "sounds" like he could be any Autobot.
In my opinion, if you take away the captions and let Sludge's actions speak for him, it's a stronger piece...but that goes back to our on-going debate over style.

JZLobo In reply to JediFlaherty [2010-08-07 00:22:36 +0000 UTC]
He doesn't exactly have any unique speech patterns in the IDW continuity. It's not the dialogue that matters here, it's the actions.
If I take away the captions, then that wouldn't explain what he's leaning over, or how his resolve against the Decepticons is hardened.

Like I said, we've talked about our difference in opinion when it comes to style. I don't think we're going to change any minds today.
My assertion in regards to the captions is simply that what you're explaining may go without saying. I think oftentimes we're afraid that the audience won't get it. These are universal themes, dirt and headstones are iconic images, and Seb's acting goes a long way; I think we'd go with you and Sludge on the journey. The captions took me out of it.
But then again, the group's biggest comment was what the headstone said, so maybe I'm the weirdo.
Just one man's opinion.

That would still leave people with the questions: Who is Sludge burying? And why? And would completely leave out the lesson he learns from her death. Imagery can convey a lot of emotion, but it can't convey everything.

Sludge is a good choice - he has precedent in this kind of situation. He befriended reporter Joy Meadows in the UK G1 comics back in the day and nearly got her killed by the 'cons when she planned to go public with her proof that not all the giant robots were evil.

Yes, I immediately thought of ther UK comics journalist (even though I could not recall the name) who appeared in two of the Dinobots' adventures.
Grimlock is cold, uncaring and unsensitive as he is supposed to be (fairly rare traits among the Autobots) and as he was described in Maximum Dinobots: he use to be quite selfish and one-minded, sometimes.

In my eyes its almost saying 'slux' but it would be a very awesome way how he got his name on earth indeed. Panelling as much as lineart has been awesomely put into place. But the coloring makes sure of that little bit of drasticness. I love it! Total Fave.

You can complain about his character all you want, but you shouldn't criticize authors for writing him in-character.

...You obviously missed the point of the Mosaic. This is about Sludge. Grimlock is literally a background character here, and he acted in character. I don't see anything to complain about.

Yes, it's the more complex Grimlock seen in "Maximum Dinobots": he used to have some flaws, like selfishness, in the old times. And he was a bit too manipulative as well, sometimes.

I'm always amused by the number of folks who don't get what a huge part of the penciller's job page design is.
I think your most recent work shows that you're really developing a good understanding of layouts. Layouts are REALLY important. And then of course, there's the black art of storytelling to learn...
