Info: Formally called Formicium, this relative of the modern driver ant, discovered in the famous Messel Pit near Frankfurt, Germany (Another member of the genus was also found in North America), is the largest ant that ever lived. Living in the lush forests of what is now Germany during the Mid Eocene epoch, the males grew up to 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) long, while the queens grew up 2.4 inches (6 centimeters) long, sporting wings of 5.9 inches (15 centimeters).
