Description Um... yeah... this is the first time I've attempted one of these, so I've probably left out a lot of material that I didn't think of. I'm pretty happy with it.

i never thought of coloring them with the lighter shades first, and now i want to color with my abandonded markers and practice to not get the streaks showing
i do have a question though
what color do u use for the skin tones? i love the colors the prismas provide (i have a large set of them) but i cant find a proper skin tone....

eggshell for the base and light peach or sand for the shadows.

NP. You can do some variations on that for different skin tones, but that's the basic combo.

Great tutorial, congrats!

Maybe you can help me... one of my markers has dried out T-T I don't know what happened, I took really good care of it and I didn't use it much... do you know if it's possivel to fix it? I thought about puting some alcohol in it, since it's alcohol based...do you know if it'll work or will I just finish ruinning my pen? XD

TresMaxwell In reply to elizaa [2010-03-22 21:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Prismas are fairly delicate things. If you don't use them often enough, they actually can dry out. There's really not a way to salvage them (wish there was). Thing is, it's likely you will have to throw it away anyway, so you might as well give the alcohol a shot. I would just put a drop or two on the tip and let it saturate a minute before you test it. If it works, let me know I usually just buy new ones when that happens, even though it hurts my wallet ever so much.

elizaa In reply to TresMaxwell [2010-03-22 21:34:33 +0000 UTC]

I tried putting just a few drops on the tip, but it didn't work so well. Since I thought it was already lost I tried putting some alcohol inside the pen, and it worked!! \o/ I don't know how much longer it will last, though :/

Oh my, I'm so sad! I take really good care of my drawing material, dunno how this happened

TresMaxwell In reply to elizaa [2010-03-22 21:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, it just happens. Every once in a while, you get a prisma with a bad tip or a bad lid and they just don't last like the others do. By the way, how did you get inside the pen without destroying it? I've never tried it before, but they seem pretty well sealed up.
Anyway, I'm glad that worked. I might have to try reconstituting a pen or two before I throw them away.

You have to open on the thin tip side... some of them you just have to pull out the black plastic, but most of them you have to put something in the small "crack" and use it like a lever (sorry, my english is really bad, especially for explaing this kind of thing XD)

TresMaxwell In reply to elizaa [2010-03-22 22:12:59 +0000 UTC]

Your English is fine, I wasn't having an issue I did figure it would have to be on the thin side. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for your help with what pens to use; I bought a Faber Castell set, though don't like how thick the smallest pen is... Will have to buy individual micron pens if I need it thinner.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Sakaryn [2009-12-24 07:14:04 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly what I do. The Bold faber castell pen is awesome for getting those really thick, deep shadows, but the thinnest they have is really not very thin so I bought a micron to supplement.

Sakaryn [2009-11-02 04:08:19 +0000 UTC]

I've been using speedball ink along with speedball dip pens but... it bleeds with the markers. I haven't tried Chinese ink with it yet but I'm assuming it'd probably bleed too.

Other than that, love Prismacolor markers. The blending's amazing.

TresMaxwell In reply to Sakaryn [2009-11-02 19:44:04 +0000 UTC]

You need to use faber castle india ink pens. Those, as well as sakura brand micron pens do not bleed with the prisma colors unless you have them layered very, very thick. Those are both what I use.

I use Tombo markers. ANything I should know about them?
Also, how do you use a blender pen?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Kingofsouls [2008-02-27 17:35:58 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea about Tombo markers. I've never even heard of them O.o are they nice?
Oh, the blender pen is really best for the prisma pencils, it doesn't do too much in the way of the markers that you can't do with your shading techniques.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kingofsouls In reply to TresMaxwell [2008-03-03 01:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Tombo are watercolor based (think paint brush).
SO, the blender pen is for pencils? O.o That's wierd.
Oh, and I'm not so good at shading. I just put the same color on top right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Kingofsouls [2008-03-03 05:09:45 +0000 UTC]

You can do that, but you won't get a very good variation in your shadows. What's best is to pick a similar color, but darker and shade with that. Test the color compatibility on a seperate sheet of paper first.

Hammy-chan [2007-07-15 20:08:29 +0000 UTC]

say you only have three colors, red, yellow and blue
could you blend the yellow and red to make orange or like the blue and yellow to get green?

or does that not work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to Hammy-chan [2007-07-16 02:09:37 +0000 UTC]

No, unfortunatley that doesn't work. All you'll get is mud... T_T Actually, you'll really just get a black...
I wish it did... it would save me a lot of money.

khsen In reply to TresMaxwell [2007-11-09 23:48:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, since I know now I won't make that mistake. However, my desk is already ruined from a giant nail polish remover spill, a black nail polish spill, a sharpie bleeding through (the first time I tried to ink in a drawing. Don't ask why I decided to do it in sharpie. It was really thin, honest!

Just one question: What exact colors did you use for the skin?

shoot, I'm going to have to look. I'll get back to you on that on. I know the shadows are light peach, but I can't remember the base.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TresMaxwell In reply to chickendog [2006-01-22 04:43:46 +0000 UTC]

Don't forget to use a buffer of a few pieces of paper underneath your work. Prismas bleed right through your paper and onto whatever is beneath it, but two or three additional sheets beneath it will keep it from hurting anything.

I just bought a set of 72 prismacolors today. Other artists ,and yourself, make it look sooo easy, but when I tried...well, it looked like a second grade kid ;.; I really enjoyed your tutorial though. The hardest part I think for

me is the skin tone...when using prismacolors, the make the color really light on the outside ,but when you use it on paper , the shade is like 20x darker! >.< Which colors are best for very soft skin tones? do you know? Anything at all would help. Also, I don't have a colorless blender...does it really help THAT much? Thanks ^.^

Taira.

TresMaxwell In reply to MiyabiOne [2005-10-30 00:29:25 +0000 UTC]

A colorless blender helps you get certain textures, but they're more suited for the pencils. The color I use for skin tones are eggshell as the base and then light peach for the shadows. If you have any more questions, I'll be glad to help.

MiyabiOne In reply to TresMaxwell [2005-10-30 02:48:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't have eggshell . ;.; The colors are reallllllly bothering me. They are sooo much darker...they dont even match the color on the outside. " Light tan" looks brown...ehh..so frustrating . >.<
