Description "What is it like?"

You ask me, my dear

"Will there be fairies...? Or things to fear?"

"For fairies sake I'd say you better come with me,
so soon you'll see !"

Now up and down it goes and round
Round and round and round !

- Blind Guardian "Fly"

While this is not an actual depiction of "Wendy" from James Matthew BarrieΒ΄s "Peter Pan", it is still DEFINITELY inspired by that story!

Actually, this started out purely as a "just for fun"-playing-around session with a photo of (Yes, its her! The original photo i used here was taken by , used with friendly permission), it somehow started to... well, snowball itself! Somehow, the photo of reminded me of her flying (even though she is just jumping in the original photo).

Now, and seeing as her and me recently talked about Peter Pan and related subjects, i thought it was nice to try, if i can somehow make her "fly" by the powers of "wonderful thoughts and imaginations", towards "the second one to the right and then then straight on until morning light"

I figured she might like that idea.

Initially, i only wanted to try out to add a glow to her... but then... Well, many of you know that feeling, when you were just plain playing around with something, and then there is this "magic moment", when youve passed a sorta "point of no return" and just CANNOT STOP anymore until its FINISHED and completely get carried away with what youre doing...

Well, thats just what happened here.

Now, when this one was finished, it was WAY past midnight.
And i looked at the Windows clock... and into my calendar...
and noticed:

Its valentines day!

And yeah... the thoughtprocess was somewhat like this:

PhotoManip of p-i-c flying...
Valentines Day...
Photomanip of p-ic flying...
Valentines Day...

(yeah, i am kinda SLOW...)

Now, anyways, it SOMEWHEN made "click" in my head and decided to not just dedicate this to my dear and close friend (after all: i have used her photo!), but even make this a very special and unique VALENTINES DAYs- CARD for her!

Oh, and actually, i didnt even mean to upload this to dA, to keep this a special gift for a special friend, on V-Day, but she encouraged me to do so, and thus i did

So... well, she already got her own, FULL RES Version of this piece, with a handwritten dedication from me, to her, but thats HERS to keep, and i wouldnt anyone else but her to have the Version with the Signature and dedication, so i simply removed it for this upload. So, shes the only one having the version with the dedication (besides me)

So...

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY, dear !!!

Thanks for being such a great friend, thanks for spending so much time with me, and even more thanks for supporting me so much and encouraging me to keep going

But... most importantly:

Thanks for being the person that you are

Lotsa hugz and a nice warm cuddle,

love, TRiG

Well, i think, i spent like... a day on it...
Actually, it started out just as "playing around" with the photo of my friend, but then it sort of "snowballed" itself.

It wasnt /that/ tough to do, the most difficult part was extracting my friend from the background of the photo, but that didnt take too long either... the rest is sort of just "experimenting" and playing with blending modes and a lil blur and color-corrections, and arranging things in a way that looks nice...

The background, for example, consist of uhm... lemme remember... 3-4 different images, blended together and adjusted til it fit the "Peter Pan" motive in my head

wors spoken like a pro I'm only a beginner at photoshop since I'm taking a digital art class at my high school. I'm not doing too bad but since the program a a bit much I don't think I'll get it but oh well. Anyway, I think you really did a nice job. You're very talented

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to VincentsFallenAngel [2009-03-29 02:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, photoshop CAN be pretty complex, because its so powerful.
but i think, a lot of people shy away from it, because of that.
They get intimidated by the power PS can have, and if you have never worked with it before, i can imagine that the userinterface might also be a little intimidating...

But meh, that shouldnt block you (or anyone else!) from trying to "dive into it". I mean, a lot of the stuff is really easy to learn, and on the other hand: Just because it has 8989566356768465435 Mio. of tools, options and functions and maybe even ways to work with it doesnt mean you need to know them all, right?

Most photoshop-users get around with about... hmm... 10% - 15% of the program...
Personally, i think i use even less XD

Besides: it can help you a lot when it comes to cleaning / colorcorrecting your scanned drawings, i guess

And thank you for the nice complement, but its seriously not too hard to do Not with some time and patience

But thank you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VincentsFallenAngel In reply to TRiGGER80 [2009-03-29 19:53:26 +0000 UTC]

yea, I'm taking a digital art clas so we mess with PS a lot, and it definately was intimidating when we first started to work with it, but I'm not too bad. Still a newbie compared to most users but I'm not too bad. Some things are pretty hard to work with and others and fairly basic, so I guess it just has to do with practice.
You are very welcome

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to VincentsFallenAngel [2009-03-29 21:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Of course its about practice!
Practice and experimenting!

If i was to say, what i would find the most important / interesting / fun things in PS...
It would be pretty straight forward:

Layers + their blending modes
Layermasks
Adjustmentlayers

and curves + Levels.

And you are welcome, too!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VincentsFallenAngel In reply to TRiGGER80 [2009-03-31 01:20:07 +0000 UTC]

totally agree. Whenever I have free time I like to mess around with the layers and see all the different things I can do with them. Its pretty astounding

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to VincentsFallenAngel [2009-03-31 23:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah!

And after a while, when you get used to them you can use them more "goal oriented"...
After a while, you keep things like: "Multiply makes white transparent" or: "Add and screen both make things lighter and are good for glows, and both make black transparent" in your mind That was really a cool feeling, when i discovered, that i kept these things in mind! and you also come up with things like: "putting a highpass-filter on a copy of a layer and setting it to overlay is another way to sharpen images!"...

Oh, and among fav tools: of yourse i forgot GRADIENTS and layerstyles

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VincentsFallenAngel In reply to TRiGGER80 [2009-04-01 00:07:16 +0000 UTC]

I love gradient! XD They're so much fun to play with! I've only gotten to use them a few times but I enjoy working with them. And thanks for the tip about sharpening. I never thought of that one ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TRiGGER80 In reply to VincentsFallenAngel [2009-04-01 00:24:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh, one nice thing about gradients that is often overlooked:

You can apply them to LayerMasks as well

Oh, and i also enjoy using the Channels-pallete a lot!
Can really come in handy.. and not just during noisereduction or ColorGrading!

You can use it to generate Masks and you can use them for extractions and whatnot...

Really cool stuff!
