Description
New chapter, with more scents and flashbacks. Also, in case you havenβt figured out yet: italic denotes thoughts and internal monologues, bold denotes emphasis. Though the latter one was obvious for everyone I bet.Next page: [link]

A pony nose would be an incredibly handy thing to have.

Until someone drops a stinker in the bathroom, and you can smell it at 100 feet instead of just 10.

So I thought I'd try making a fimfiction story and haven't been getting on it, what's what with it?
Well it's not canon for one, but My pony starts in the forest, has trouble walking, gets knocked out (slides down muddy hill, hits tree) and wakes up in a (well smaller bed) and is greeted by a pony after going into a bathroom to check the mirror
Wow

Tabula rasa=blank slate. It's an ancient story trope.

No, your nose hasn't gotten stronger.
It's just the air... THE VERY ESSENCE OF THE PLACE.

Lol, is that right? I didn't know equines had a better sense of smell than us? Actually I was pretty sure they didn't... I've read in numerous places that a human's sense of smell comparable to that of an average dog when we're actually trying to use it to locate something! Of course trained dogs have eons on us but I remember reading an article talking about people trying find chocolate with their nose in a field while blindfoled and they found the chocolate faster than the dogs XD
Although it's been a while since I read the paper, I probably don't remember a lot of details.

Actually, no. Dogs sense of smell is waaaaay better than that of humans.
"It has been estimated that dogs, in general, have an olfactory sense ranging from one hundred thousand to one million times more sensitive than a human's. In some dog breeds, such as bloodhounds, the olfactory sense may be up to 100 million times greater than a human's."
And so is equine sense of smell.

But but but! I'm sure there was something in that article... Ah well, probably has something to do with how intelligent we are despite our lowered senses.

TriteBristle In reply to cormy1 [2012-11-26 22:58:46 +0000 UTC]
Almost! It's indeed in the brain: dogs' brain is dominated by areas that are responsible for the sense of smell, the subpart that's responsible for identifying scents is 40 times bigger than what humans have, relative to total brain size. They can basically smell every ingredients that's in the soup cooking on the oven, which is pretty cool I think.
And on the other hand yes, humans most likely lost most of their sense of smell during the eons because it became less and less of a factor in survival, unlike e.g. intelligence.
