purplemalemute In reply to DCarrier [2014-09-22 06:41:01 +0000 UTC]

Trying to make my OC feel inadequate? Unicorns pay for their magical abilities with the rest of their bodies. They can't run or kick anywhere near as hard as Earth Ponies, or even Pegasi. When was the last time you saw a unicorn kick down a tree or smash a boulder to pieces?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DCarrier In reply to purplemalemute [2014-09-22 19:28:46 +0000 UTC]

Not inadequate. Suboptimal. Just because nopony has it all doesn't mean you should just sit there and accept that you don't have it all.

Bonbon figured out how to make unicorns strong, didn't she? She just needs to figure out magic, flight, immortality, and, of course, everything good that not even alicorns have.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

purplemalemute In reply to DCarrier [2014-09-22 21:17:00 +0000 UTC]

But Alicorns must EARN that power. Think of Trixie as an example. If she had wielded all the awesome powers of an Alicorn upon her return to Ponyville in Magic Duel, would the citizens be living toleratable lives? Would Twilight have been able to stop her?

There's a saying among humans. "Power corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutly" Trixie demonstrated this clearly, and if Bon-Bon couldn't get this magical power to all ponies equally, there'd be a LOT of bullying and instability. Think of a kid in school with an assault rifle he got, while the others don't. Or have two kids have that rifle. Or all of them. Will things be okay?

Bon-Bon simply doesn't seem to be satisfied with her life as an Earth Pony, for reasons the author will tell us. This is her personal struggle to change who she is.

The lesson here shouldn't be the Earth Ponies are inferior to Unicorns, each has their strengths and weaknesses. What matters is one ponies struggle to be something she isn't. It wouldn't matter that much, but changing yourself on that level has consequences.

I realize the argument I made earlier would only apply if Bon-Bon created a potion to give ponies the power of an Alicorn. It would seem superfluous and an over exaggeration if you simply want to change race. Think about the ramifications of that power though. The power to change who you are could be great, and terrible.

A Unicorn wanting to fly with his friends gives up a great career as a gem enchanter, a Pegasi who wants to run marathons as an Earth Pony loses a whole Dimension that's always been a part of her. An Earth Pony wanting to be a Unicorn loses the strength she's built up for a gift that isn't hers.

You get something new, but lose what you had. There is great, but terrible power in that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DCarrier In reply to purplemalemute [2014-09-22 21:36:29 +0000 UTC]

"Trixie demonstrated this clearly"

I'm pretty sure there was more to the corrupting influence of the Alicorn Amulet than power.

"and if Bon-Bon couldn't get this magical power to all ponies equally, there'd be a LOT of bullying and instability."

She's not finishing a spell by Starswirl the Bearded that she's the only one who can cast. She's making candy. I would assume she'll distribute it if she's allowed to.

"It wouldn't matter that much, but changing yourself on that level has consequences."

She's just giving herself magic. It's like giving someone a computer. It has consequences, but it's not like that makes giving someone a computer is a bad idea.

"A Unicorn wanting to fly with his friends gives up a great career as a gem enchanter, a Pegasi who wants to run marathons as an Earth Pony loses a whole Dimension that's always been a part of her. An Earth Pony wanting to be a Unicorn loses the strength she's built up for a gift that isn't hers."

That depends on how expensive the candy is. You could just switch to whatever race is convenient at the moment.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

purplemalemute In reply to DCarrier [2014-09-22 22:15:33 +0000 UTC]

On the subject of Trixie, it can be argued that she was taking revenge on the ponies who humiliated her and ruined her life, but that one can't be proven by either of us.

The point I was making on some ponies being more powerful than others (if Bon-Bon makes an Alicorn candy) is mostly about availability. Diamond Tiara could afford all of the one-of-a-kind super powerful candy she wants, while Dinky Doo might not be able to afford any at all. Tell me that would be a good thing.

On the changing who you are subject, look at Lyra. She has what most humans would die for. Magical powers, living in Ponyville, a best friend. But she doesn't have her hands anymore, and misses them. Subconsciously, her body knows she's supposed to be human. On top of that, she lost her memories of her old friends, family, and world. That's something that isn't worth losing to me.

Yeah, the candy PROBABLY won't erase memories, that's hurt sales. But you don't appreciate what you have until you don't have it anymore. Who's to say she can change them back to exactly what they were? There's a reason this secret Organization is trying to shut her down

I don't consider healthcare or magic to be inherently different from anything else. You set up the economy so the rich get more than the poor, in order to give people incentive to be productive. If you don't agree with that, there's the option of rationing them.

If she makes one for every variant, then she presumably would be able to change races. But even supposing it is irreversible, dismissing the use of the candies out of hand is not a good idea. If some ponies changed race and ended up regretting it, they'd be stuck as a race they don't want to be. But if you don't offer the candies, and ponies do actually prefer the other races, then there'd be lots of ponies stuck as a race they don't want to be. You'd have to give it to a few of them, and find out how many regret it. It also may be a good idea to try to discourage it until the marginal pony (the one least certain about her decision) is equally likely to end up preferring either race.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

purplemalemute In reply to DCarrier [2014-09-22 23:15:27 +0000 UTC]

The healthcare question is similar to another debate we've had in real life too. Scientists are beginning to understand genes and genetics extremely well. With more knowledge, they could genetically modify a baby in the womb, making them smarter, stronger, or whatever the family wants done. Obviously, only the rich could afford this sort of treatment. Would that lead to a situation where the rich have super babies and the poorer children can't compete with them at all? We can't say.

I'm not sure Princess Celestia, or any of the other princesses for that matter, would like the idea of their subjects being able to change race with a gulp of a candy. We know each pony has a cutie mark that shows them their special talent, which directly ties into their destiny. The season three finale shows us just what happens when that destiny is changed, and how badly it affected the Mane 5.

While there is great potential, think of the consequences. Your special talent could be meaningless, your happy destiny is destroyed. This candy, while intended to improve ponies lives, could destroy them. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The Bioshock universe was caused by a drug that gave people wonderful power, but had a hidden side effect no one noticed until it was too late.

Yes, this candy could still have a great effect on the pony community. But if so, it would have to be tightly controled and analyzed. The government would have to be very careful with it. As it stands, Bon-Bon could end up selling a super mutant virus at her shop, with no one the wiser. That's the most dangerous distribution method of all.

Wow... I think our debate is predicting a good portion of the story.

"Obviously, only the rich could afford this sort of treatment. Would that lead to a situation where the rich have super babies and the poorer children can't compete with them at all?"

Not if the treatment is rationed. Or if you have a basic guaranteed income that's enough to afford genetically modifying the baby.

"I'm not sure Princess Celestia, or any of the other princesses for that matter, would like the idea of their subjects being able to change race with a gulp of a candy."

I'm not sure I'd like them deciding whether or not I can change race.

"While there is great potential, think of the consequences."

While I admit it's possible that the consequences are bad, you have to test it first. It's like if you develop a new drug. If you want to help anyone, you have to at some point test it on humans. The drug may do more harm than good. But if it does, you only hurt the people you tested it. It has the potential to help everyone. As such, rather than abandoning the idea of drugs, you let them be tested on humans. The lives saved from drugs that work is more than the lives lost from drugs that do more harm than good.

"As it stands, Bon-Bon could end up selling a super mutant virus at her shop, with no one the wiser."

I don't think she's going to make somethingΒ contagiousΒ on accident.

It probably would be a good idea for the government to step in and make sure she's testing things appropriately, but they don't seem to be very interested in that.
