Description They had gotten an early start, rising before the sun by a few hours headstart. The spring tundra air was still cold and though the trees were free of snow, the air seemed to hint at its promise. They wouldn't have too much longer to go on their journey, but Ahnah hoped that she and Silak wouldn't be too long now.

Ahnah allowed Silak to take the lead with Cay - who had only been little more than a pup when she had met him initially. Cay had grown considerably, a spitting image of his forebear. Ahnah sat astride Cyrano, the most wild of her tokotas. He seemed to have more intuition than Karenina or Eyre, knowing the safest path with a strange certainty. He took charge effectively, though Ahnah make sure to rein him in so Silak could have Cay be in front, and more efficiently get them to their destination.

In the bruise-colored sky, the clouds had begun to gather, and a chilly sound of wild animals crept into the ambient atmosphere. Ahnah seemed a bit nervous, as Cyrano became more alert, his nose sniffing the air to catch the scent. She could tell he had determined what was up ahead, though his posture seemed unsure. The pup nee Achoo had a keen sense of smell. Ahnah whistled to Silak, as they entered a small clearing away from the towering pines. In the distance, she could see the outline of a tokota, and other animals.

"Wolves sometimes run with the wild tokotas..." Silak whispered to Ahnah, her experience guiding her train of thought. "They occasionally adopt lost or unwanted tokota pups into a wolf pack, and the packs that do tend to be stronger as a result. I am guessing the female here was abandoned because she is so dark, probably black. Keep a tight lead. There may be more wolves out here."

Cay had put his head down, trying to signal to the black female his deference and his lack of desire for a confrontation. Cyrano kept his head up to peer out toward her, his eyes focusing on her with curiosity. Ahnah kept him in check, using the halter-bridle to bring his attention away from her. She knew he could be more bold and had no desire to instigate with what was, for all intents and purposes, a wild animal. Silak and Ahnah waited for the black tokota and her brown companion to rejoin several others, waiting on a nearby mound, before they began their trek anew. Ahnah got the sense that they were paralleling each other, and wondered if these wolves were performing a similar duty, testing the tokota that ran with them as kin.
