They'd made good time in the first part of their trek, and though the day was still rather young, Eska decided it'd be prudent to pull off for the night. The last few evenings had been unseasonably cold, the soft snow that had fallen before freezing solid as the darkness made the land more frigid. Eska knew that sphinx tokotas couldn't tolerate the cold so well, and though Crusoe was as tough as they came, he would be at a minimum uncomfortable if they were exposed completely, even with his special fleece-lined tack. Eska had spent a small fortune on outfitting him, selling the kills of a few dozen hunts, even taking a small loan from Ahnah to make up the rest of the funds. Getting the thing on the sphinx was another matter altogether, but after a few tries, and realizing that he was actually rather comfortable, the sphinx male had finally accepted it. Ahnah had joked that seeing Crusoe walk in the booties was nearly worth the sum of the money she'd loaned him.

He snuffled around as Eska gathered sticks to build a small campfire, pawing at the dying grasses that were still poking up from the sludge of ice and snow. He huffed as he saw birds fly from a tree nearby, spooked by something, he wasn't sure.

"Cru!" Eska's voice carried to him, and the sphinx returned promptly, keeping his cropped ears open for the sound of any other predators as he returned. He seemed less than pleased as he arrived, to see the flames licking upward, just beside the simple canvas tent. He huffed in Eska's ear, as the young man clutched a pile of nearly-dried kindling.

"Yes, I know, you don't like it, but you'll thank me when the night falls, Meathead!" Eska sighed, recalling the night he'd rescued the sphinx, remembering the accidental flames licking away at the cages, likely leading to the deaths of many of the tokota's challengers, maybe even some of his friends. It wasn't a pleasant memory. The two sat in a strained silence, as Eska finished preparing the fire for a long night, setting out new wood and dung to dry and be used as needed. The fog through the mountain pass thickened, and the sun dipped away from them, covering the land in shadow. The bright flame of the campfire blossoming heat and light toward the pair as they consumed the first day's ration, preparing for the rest of the long road ahead.
