Actually (WARNING: Avatar nerd alert!), Toph 'sees' everything. Through the minutest vibration in the ground, she's even able to sense an ant mound (a posteriori, she 'sees' the tree too).
What really is a stupid idea is to hide at all, since Toph is the ultimate hide-and-seek champion
