Description
Both of these cards were shot completely in half by my pellet gun. Those are the pellets you see halfway through.Check out my other high speed stuff on my website!

Using my high speed photography setup, I shot the edge of playing cards with a .177cal 512fps pellet gun. Effective exposure of 30 microseconds.

I used to do something similar to this back in the 1980's with a bb gun.
This was in the film days so I never knew how they turned out until the next day or two.
The results were no where near as good as this.

Wow, what got me into this kind of thing was someone online who posted pictures they made in the 70s/80s (I forget which) of things like this. It sounds like it was very difficult then. Immediate feedback is so nice now. I end up taking about 15 test shots to adjust everything before I actually take the shot.

yeah, until i get the hang of things, it's much easier to do tests with pellets. bullets will be coming as soon as i get back from my trip i'm leaving for tomorrow.
i've managed to work out a lot of the problems I was having the first day I started high speed photography when I took this picture. I've just been too lazy to bring my camera up from the basement.

Any idea if your setup can catch a bullet? What is your flash duration?

My flash duration is 1/64,000 of a second. My friend who is in charge of the firepower says he has a certain grain .22 caliber bullet that can go as low as 350 feet per second. He has a huge variety of guns and ammo to choose from. My pellet gun goes 512fps, so that comes out to be about 2mm of movement during the flash. Now that I've fixed some of the mistakes I made before, I have almost no noticeable blur with the pellet.

i bought a phototransistor to detect my laser pointer. i have it set to immediately flash, but I also have the option to set a delay. but instant is easier.

So 15 microseconds. That's really pushing the limit of xenon flash tubes at standard voltages, good job there.
.22 CB Caps are 350 ft/sec at the slowest I see. I wonder if they'll be accurate enough with that little propellant. Good luck for sure.
