Description
"There's a first time for everything."Truer words were never spoken and case in point with my latest Danny Phantom pic. This one is based on a scene from my fanfic, "Hearts and Minds". After narrowly escaping Nocturne's dream world, where he sealed away their memories of each other, here we have Danny and Sam on the roof of Casper High, during a school dance. This image shows Danny and Sam sharing a warm moment after just moments ago, saying out loud for the first time that they love each other.
Without a doubt, the hardest part of this whole pic was Sam's dress. The original pencil drawing was difficult enough (it must have taken me at least five or six tries before I finally came up with a spider web design that I thought worked). But the hard lines and color were what turned out to be the real nightmare, what with the webs, the fishnets, and most complicated, the semi-transparent shawl she's got draped over her arms. I can think of at least half a dozen ways off the top of my head that I could have made this ordeal A LOT easier on myself. But when it was all said and done, I'm really glad I went the extra mile on this. There's just a lot more to see that wouldn't have been there if I'd gone a simpler way and I'm exceptionally proud of the end result. Hope you all feel the same.

I love it, but it's way to tall with the legs...sorries!
Just focus more on making it normal! Use references!

For the record, I DO use references (I wouldn't be able to do half the stuff I do without them). And the length of the legs is not an unfamiliar critique I've been faced with. It's just that in the heat of the actual creative moment, it's not something you pay attention to until it's too late, which is basically what ended up happening here.

Very cute. Love the stars in the background as well as her dress. You're very good at little details. A big complaint, however, is that they seem absurdly tall. They're both about 7 heads tall, and the fact that they're taller than the door in the background doesn't help at all.
Doors are normally about 6 feet in height. There's no real perspective in the picture to argue that the door is farther away, so it just makes the two even taller.

Well, I'm glad you liked the dress. Yeah, getting that colored was definitely the hardest part (although in retrospect, I came across a technique or two that would have made the process less contrived). THe truth is, I could think of at least half a dozen ways off the top of my head that I could have made doing the dress a lot easier on myself. But in the end, I was glad that I went the extra mile with it. I'm glad you like the starry night, too. That was definitely intended to be one of the pic's main selling points.
Now, as for your comment about their height, first, I would argue about the door behind them. I actually thought I'd contributed to the illusion of distance quite well. Having said that, however, it is true that I did make Danny and Sam a little too tall in this picture. That's actually been a common complaint (of the few complaints there've been), but it's one of those things that you don't really notice in the heat of working on the project, so it doesn't actually draw your attention until after you're actually finished. Still, I think you'll find that of all my DP pics, that's the only picture that has this problem. In all my other pics, Danny and Sam are pretty much the size they should be.

My issue is that there's not enough illusion of distance in the picture. There's no perspective to suggest that the door is farther away. You could try adding shadows to create perspective, or pull the door away from the edge a little bit.
Something to remember is that the typical character is about 4-5 heads tall (measure the height of the character's head with your thumb and forefinger, then count that distance from head to foot.) Your characters are 6-7 heads tall.
Because it's an issue for you, it should be something that you should look out for next time you draw a picture. Also, for the benefit of the doubt, try over-shooting how short you think it should actually be.

Well, like I say, I think this picture was the only one I did where there was any real issue with the height. As for the background, I thought it looked fine, so I wasn't too concerned about it.
As for the "heads tall" thing, truth is, I've never been all that obsessed with that extreme a level of accuracy. As long as everyone looks to be relatively the height they should be in comparison to one another, then I'm happy. And if, in the end, I find that I've made an error somewhere, then all I can really do is just file it away in my head and try not to make the same mistake next time.

Well, like I say, you weren't the first person to point out the height discrepancy. And it was one of those things I had to agree with, in retrospect. It's just one of those things I have to be more careful of next time.

TuxedAaron In reply to katsumaro [2010-12-28 09:49:10 +0000 UTC]
So glad you like it. As for what kind of dance it is, well, I'm not sure it's a major MAJOR type of thing. A lot of Hartman's shows hold onto that old-fashioned vibe that you dress formal when you're going to a dance. I was actually thinking of making it a specific type of dance when I was planning to wait for this story to be written (my original plan was not to have Danny and Sam declare their love for each other so soon). But then I got impatient, so I just said, "The hell with it" and went ahead anyway.
But I'm glad you like the outfits. Obviously, Danny's suit is the one he wore in the episode, "Parental Bonding". But Sam's dress was entirely my creation. I took a typical, semi-slutty formal dress and tweaked it in ways so that it would be something Sam actually wouldn't mind being seen in. That was the general approach.

Actually, ALL of my stories are posted on fanfiction.net (the link is right here - [link] ). I also posted my Danny Phantom and Kim Possible stories here as well to make it easier for some who don't feel like going there, but there are a couple stories still on ff.net that haven't made their way here yet. Also, because of DA's 64K limit on text submissions, I had to break almost all of my stuff up into small chunks to get it to fit, so ff.net might be the better bet for reading purposes. Whichever direction you choose to take, though, I hope you find the stories enjoyable.

Glad you like it. I kind of thought of combining a rather straightforward dress design (after all, it's nothing you don't see out there) with Sam's own individual flair. You know, the spider webs, the fishnets, the hairstyle. That's all her. THe glitter blush is kind of a toss up. She might be into that sort of thing or she might dismiss it as something that only vapid party girls wear. But she's wearing here, so...
Again, really glad you like the picture. Hopefully, you've had a chance to enjoy my other pics (and the fanfics they're primarily based on) just as much.

Well, this is why they coined the phrase, "Youth is wasted on the young." Of course they don't know how good they've got it. Kids don't really know a lot of anything, if you think about it. It isn't until they actually get out into the world that they finally realize that.
Of course, I still consider myself young, but you get what I'm saying.

There's going to be Danny and Sam and Tucker and Valerie and Paulina And Dash and Danielle and Wulf and Walker and the escaped prisoner from Walker's prison (I'm not going to reveal who that is yet, don't want to ruin the surprise). So yeah, there are going to be a lot of pieces in play on this one, some of them playing larger roles than others...
Wait a minute...That's it! I'VE GOT IT! I know what I'm going to call this story! And it's so simple, I can't believe I didn't come up with it before! And believe it or not, you did help a little, so thank you for that.

Oh and by the way (since I know you're wondering) the title of my next Danny Phantom fic is going to be called, "Laws of Attraction". Impressive image. I was always curious about how Sam looked during this moment. Now I have a visual aid. I have to say, I'm a bit surprised. I gathered from what I read of that scene that Danny and Sam were sitting on the roof when they had this moment, seeing as how Sam's finger accidentally brushed into Danny's. Still, congratulations on once again doing Hartman animation proud.

Glad you liked the pic. To be honest, providing a visual aid is primarily why I drew it. As for the point in the story you're mentioning, at that moment, no, Danny and Sam weren't actually sitting on the roof. They were actually leaning on the ledge and just staring off into space for the most part when their fingers touched. This picture is basically what happened afterward.

Well, I don't personally have a problem with ff.net. I think they still work fine. And posting stories here is a bit more of a chore than I'd originally anticipated, mostly because of the site's 64K limit when it comes to text submissions. This meant that I had to divide almost all of my stories into chapters (and almost all of my chapters into smaller chapters) to get them to fit. A bit of a pain. But if it makes it easier for people who frequent here more than ff.net to read my stories, then why not?
