So here it is... My latest and greatest creation yet. I've spent most of the last month working on this so its been a long time coming.

Im really happy with how the nebula turned out. I went through about 10 different nebulas before I eventually combined all the good parts into one nebula, which actually worked suprisingly well. It was all hand painted by the way. Thanks to my handy dandy Intuos 4.

The terrain was done in Terragen 2 DE. I went through about 5 different renders just to get the lighting right. I then decided I would take the extra step and render it again with ray traced shadows enabled. At about 200 hours of rendering (yes, 200 hours. My computer sucks) a storm cuased the power to flicker, restarting my computer. I nearly threw it off a roof once I got home from work and found out. So I decided to stick with the render I already had, ray traceless.

I used a refrence pic of myself for the painter.
Planet terrain was made using images from Google Earth.

You have my first critique here on DA e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>

I would like to start off by saying that this subject really hits my soft spot, I am a huge astronomy geek. Your attention to detail is awesome, The impact craters and mountains are nearly perfect for a no/little atmosphere planetoid. The lights on the planet's surface are interesting also, it makes me wonder about what's on the surface, rather than just being dark land masses. And is that some activity in the upper (northern?) atmosphere, Aurora? Fantastic.

Although I'm not entirely sure if you're depicting a really young star with excess gasses around it, or a supernova, It's an interesting effect.

When I saw your nebula I immediately thought of the area right around the Orion nebula(M42). Most images depict it with the same color scheme/gas cloud formation. Could this have been part of your inspiration for your nebula? You did a good job of making the cloud structure Naturally random(if that makes sense) with nice solid coverage and translucent combinations.

You have a nice density of background stars with varying brightnesses. My only issue with this is the spikes coming from some of the stars. This tends to only happen in images from certain kinds of telescopes or equipment. However, I do understand that this is your vision and you can make it however you wish e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Great idea putting your little artist there painting the view. It was unexpected and a nice surprise to see the image he/she was painting. I would think there would be footprints or a spacecraft nearby, but it doesn't necessarily bother me that they are absent.

This is altogether an awesome piece. I've looked at a lot of space art, yours is both original and extremely detailed.
I hope that you enjoyed my critique, and that I did not offed you in any way. I would also be interested in hearing what inspired you to create this.

Well your also my first critique so congradulations.

Yeah that fancy stuff at the top of the planet is aurora. This is the first time I've tried to add that effect and I think it turned pretty nice.

The glow around the sun is just supposed to be from the haze of the atmosphere. I know its a little over eggsaturated but as an artist i maintain the right to bend the laws of reality.

Nailed it. The Orion nebula is my favorite. Thanks to google earth I have a real nice picture of it which helped to inspire mine.

Yeah, I thought I stuck gold when I decided to put a guy painting in the picture. All old school like. Its probably hard to tell but I actually rendered out the scene in Terragen from the painters perspective to add the little extra bit of detail. I had actually started to put some foot prints in the ground around him but it didn't look right. I kind of got lazy around the end and never got back around to adding them.

As far as inspiration for the peice goes. I created the planet a while back. It itself was 6000x6000 and I was really happy with how it turned out. The terragen scene just seemed to come out so easily. I dont know, the whole peice just seemed to fall together really easy.

Absolutely awesome work there. I can totally feel with you there. Powerflickers are a nightmare. But I bow to the 200 hours render time. I have not yet endeavored such a project. I think the max for me to this day was something around 18 hours.

Kudos also for the nebula. Been there, too. Starting over again, just because. Overall a great composition though. Really well done.

This piece is so beautiful and detailed!
That nebula is stunning, I love the colour and the lighting effects ^^
The tiny lights on the Earth-like planet, the random patterns of the clouds, the craters and the fading mountains at the horizon are are marvelous *_*
Very nice the detail of the double shadow cast by the artist and his stuff because of the multiple light source.
Congrats

Dungeoneer [2010-05-07 11:09:09 +0000 UTC]

I see plenty high-quality aspects:

- illumination appears to to be provided by the visible light-sources only, if there's ambient light it is applied very carefully (is there?)
- the star in the middle (behind the cloud/nebula) is simply marvellous
- the ground fog is great
- the golden cut is applied, and reasonably so

What irritates me a little is that the distance between the stellar bodies - to my eyes - appears to low to protect them from each other's destructive tidal forces, the so called "Roche Limit" appears to be under-filled, so two planets massive enough to maintain an atmosphere would - in reality - already have destructed each other.

But that is a minor point, it is a really a GREAT work.
