Description
Follows the OTL until 1944.-----
Divided after the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the southern half of Sakhalin was annexed by Japan and administrated as the Karafuto Prefecture. When the Soviet Union declared war on Japan in 1945, the Karafuto Prefecture was occupied and annexed by the Soviets. While most of the Japanese population was either deported to Hokkaido or sent to labor camps in Siberia. While the southern half of Sakhalin was slated to be joined with the northern half, the process was slowed when World War Two ended in 1947 and when refugees from Japan settled in the former Karafuto Prefecture when the Japanese War (1951-1952) broke out. The Soviet government allowed the refugees and the former Japanese GULAG inmates to settle in the former Karafuto Prefecture. Southern Sakhalin was administrated under military occupation until 1954 were it was reorganized as the Karafuto Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic due to the large Japanese population. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1999, the Sakhalin Autonomous Okrug ( [link] ) was given Federal subject status, but still technically part of the Khabarovsk Krai ( [link] ). The Karafuto ASSR was reorganized as the Karafuto Republic.

Well, Karafuto was a prefecture of Japan. During this world's version of the Cold War, relations between Karafuto and Japan varies. North Japan is friendly and are connected with the Sakhalin-Hokkaido Tunnel. The South is more hostile due to the lack of a peace treaty between the Empire of Japan (which South Japan considers itself its successor) to end WWII.
