Description
Based of a what-if question that popped into my mind. What if the US never finished the atomic bomb, and ended up fighting on the Japanese Home Islands? What if the Soviets invaded Hokkaido? What sort of weapons would be used in this final battle? The Type 15's round, the 7.7x35mm Arisaka, is a shortened version of the 7.7x58mm Arisaka used in the Type 99 rifle ( [link] ). Invented to help arm the Home Guards as the Allies advance. While their numbers are encountered every now and then, the main forces still use their weapons left over from earlier in the war. The Type 15 can be used as a straight pull back bolt-action rifle if the weapon fails to cycle. The Type 15, Type 20, and Type 21 were used heavily by both the Peopleβs Republic of Japan and the State of Japan after WWII in the Japan War (1951-1952). When the Japanese Defense Forces (South Japan) attacked the Northβs capital of Yamagata, most of the soldiers on both sides used these weapons, along with many other weapons left over from Imperial Japan. North Japan used these weapons to retake Yamagata and invade the Ibaraki Prefecture. Since the end of the Japan War, both sided have replaced these weapons, however most paramilitary forces and riot police still have many weapons ready to be used.
While the Type 15 may be phased out, it is still used as a ceremonial weapon by the North's People's Diet Guards and the South's Imperial Guards. A few Type 15's were deployed in Afghanistan during the 80's with the North's Japanese People's Army. Many older Type 15's were also donated to mujaheddin forces by South Japan.

It's full-auto, but can be used as a bolt-action should the gas system break

The Japanese couldn't have made these until after the war any way, the US virtually destroyed japans industrial capability, the couldn't even build what they already had .

True, which is why its nothing more then a fun what if... scenario. If they would make them, it would be made of substandard parts in caves or other areas.

Here's a fun fact, the US had planes that called for the use atom bombs in an invasion of Japan to destroy areas of heavy resistance.

"Just wait 48 hours for radiation to subside before area is safe for units to enter." An actual belief during planning of Operation Downfall.

I'm impressed by your knowledge of it. It's a good thing it never went through, judging by what happened to soldiers and sailors during the bikini atoll tests, the results would have been horrific.

In 1954 the Soviets tested a nuke, and Zhukov told his troops it was a just a training drill. They were told it was a fake nuclear explosion.

Eh, they were so low on resources by that time, most of the soldiers were using decades old weapons drudged up from god knows where. I doubt they could have developed and issued a whole new rifle. And the Japanese always did suck at designing small arms anyway. Look at their heavy machineguns, they used 30 ROUND STRIPS!!!!

Wasn't there also a machine gun that used 5 round clips through a hopper?

Yup. The Japanese made the best sword in the world, and one of the best fighter aircraft of the second world war, but when it came to guns... Well, look at the guns in Anime... Not very practical. Although some of their infantry weapons did look rather interesting

I know, but this this was based off a what-if question. I felt like making it before I forgot because I thought it looked cool

Hmm...interesting...from research though, the Japanese were gearing up all sorts of bigger things than just their infantry small arms. I mean like a bunch of human torps, suicide bombers, etc, and I'm pretty sure they were training just about everyone to be a soldier.

Yes, the Volunteer Fighting Corps. The Japanese where making newer tanks to compete with US armor, and jet fighters to combat the bombers. This was just based off a what-if question
