Description
"...next time, doc."It's been a pretty decent year of competitive, even with some gigantic hiccups from a couple of leagues here and there. I'm impressed at what things managed to get done despite the odds. Looking forward to doing production for i55 stuff this month in England!

Any tips for someone starting out with SFM? I just got the program and don't know where to begin. Clearly I can't make videos yet but was wondering if you could give some pointers for making still images like this.

I'd say watch the Valve's pose-to-pose and camera tutorial on the official Source Filmmaker channel - from there, figure out how posing the models work within SFM and find which is comfortable for you while troubleshooting along the way with the help of people like Jimer Lins, Pte Jack and the power of Google.
A good thing to remember too is camera FOV - this is a pretty good tutorial explaining how camera FOV works. Will help you a lot in terms of perspective.

really love the emotions portrayed by both teams and the lighting adds a nice and somewhat gloomy tone for red while it adds a cheerful and excited one for blue

The contrast between the two teams was really important for me to establish; I wanted to imply both teams tried their hardest, thus the victory celebrating of BLU and the bitter consoling of RED.

I know you're working with what you have, and otherwise it's a very good picture, but those bullet holes really look off.

Thanks for your feedback!
The bullet holes were ripped officially from Surgeon Simulator's Meet the Medic DLC, which in turn were also utilized in the actual Meet the Medic film when Medic is operating on Heavy. This means they're official models and thus part of the TF2 artstyle. However if you meant placement or otherwise, how would you recommend I utilize them to not be as off?

Really? Didn't knew that.
Anyway, to the point: (I suck at being constructive, I hope this makes sense)
They look, for lack of a better word, too neat. A dot and some torn things, there's no bloodstains on the clothes around it. The one on Pocket's helmet bothers me the most, because it's attached to a loose helmet and the "skin" on the wound looks well only when the clothes are more or less fitting.
Maybe that's how bullet wounds "operate", I was never shot, so my comments might all be void. Or maybe those bloodstains are there and Id didn't notice them.

Thank you! This helps a lot, I'll keep it in mind.
In the past I've done something similar where there was a lot of wear-and-tear as well as mess everywhere. This piece here was where I decided to tone it down a bit (there's very subtle red colouring around bullet wounds) because I sort of felt like it was too much for TF2's artstyle. There's a strange amount of cleanliness on Heavy even though his ribcage is like wide open and there should be blood everywhere. Scout and Demoman also seem pretty blood-stain free, it's weird since Medic is the only one with blood. The "skin" on the wound thing for the helmet is a good point though.

That's good, I wanted to imply that both teams tried really hard - BLU Team is celebrating a well-earned victory. RED Team is struggling with a difficult loss.

BLU did a good job, but don't worry, RED will eventually get back on their feet and that Medigun will heal people up once again.

I'm trying to get in the habit of commenting on pieces I really like and mando I like this one. You can tell you put a lot of work and thought into this piece in the different elements used as well as the work of others. The team consoling each other is what makes it for me, really, because that's what TF2 is for me. So thanks for this piece. It's going in my wallpaper stack.

There is no politics of RED or BLU within this picture's storybuilding or how biased Valve puts RED in their Meet the Team videos; this was intended as the aftermath of a struggle between individuals who played it fair and fought their best, and one set of men came out over the other.

Thank you! I wanted that contrast between BLU Team and RED Team to really stand out - how hard BLU Team tried with how excited they're celebrating, how hard RED Team tried to defend their last point with how many alternate weapons surround them as well as their injuries (though BLU Team also has an injured Soldier, it doesn't show very well though his helmet is also bandaged).

I thought about adding the skins briefly, dismissed it very quickly, though the timing wouldn't be too far off on that assumption so I leave that interpretation up for debate. Glad you like my lighting, thank you! I tried something new today with removing vibrance but boosting the reds; it won't be a common trend because I don't think I particularly like it when other artists do it, but for this, it works really well IMO.
I'd say it's for every 6v6 team that's ever had to deal with the fight of a match's pressure, the struggle of defending the last, the last chance to make finals. Every teammate that feels like it was their fault for a loss, whether or not it wasn't - every Medic that might have died at the last push, every Roamer or Pocket whose rockets and bomb-ins just didn't line up, every Demo who didn't feel like his DM was enough, every Scout that didn't feel like they cleaned up, every fellow who tried to offclass in an attempt to protect last point. This is for every 6v6 team that's faced failure and knows how heavily it weighs - hopefully, it won't be a lasting weight and they'll continue on forward in an effort to better their skills and their team chemistry, find new teams if their current teams don't work out, and find some form of victory and success.

Very poignant and well said, I myself don't play on a 6's team currently because I play medic and I don't think I could deal with the amount of pressure put on you. However when I do play there is a vast sense of accomplishment.
