Description
Two different species... same family. Giant Silk Moths. Saturniidae. Top is a male Antheraea polyphemus. Bottom is a female Hyalophora cecropia. Both emerged early this moring. Just after this shot... the polyphemus took off. The female cecropia hasn't mated yet... so she's not willing to fly any where until she's accomplished that goal. This cecropia is 6.15 inches from wing tip to wing tip. The polyphemus is 4.65 inches from wing tip to wing tip.

Hm. Interesting tactic... I'm not taking off until I've mated.

Their colors and patterns are just out of this world. You are so fortunate that you are able to breed them and observe them up close!

I'm feeling very fortunate for being able to actually see them and hold them and to breed them is icing on the cake.

i used to be able to walk outside and less then 20 feet from my door at night i'd find any type of insect and amphibian i'd dream of...even a few mammals that all liked to come out at night. but those were the great days of old when i lived in Tennessee. ~sigh~
