Description

This is my first attempt at Chasing and Repoussé. I wanted to try this artform and I can say it's very satisfying. After trying this I think I've got the repoussing part down. but the chasing needs work. It's just not smooth. Then again with this being a test, and the image being a pumpkin, I decided this was good enough for this piece.

Definately going to do more with this artform, I find it very rewarding to see the metal move beneath me.

Specs:

Material: 0.5mm stainless steel  (24-25 gauge, I think?)

time taken: up to half an hour each evening for about a week.

I started out in 0,5 mm stainless because I heard from others that the material puts up one heck of a fight. And I tell you, they ain't lying. So I figured start thin, and work my way up to find my limit. Also gonna try brass ^^

BIG THANKS TO :

for awakening my interest in this artform. And for giving numerous tips and insights.

Thanks man!

Copper can be fun as well. You can use a sulfur compound to do a quick patina to it then rub down the raised bits... Creates a very nice effect. Not familiar with chasing though, is that anything like gilding?

copper eh? the tutorial video's I found actually work with copper. I might try that, but copper is not suitalbe for armor, which is my final goal. the patina does sound like something I wanna try. does sulfer work on brass as well?

Gilding is (in my knowledge) the plating of one material with another, like gold leaf on a statue.

Chasing is the manipulating and honing of a surface through controlled hamering. think of it as planishing, which smoothes out the surface of a piece of armour after forging the shape, but chacing can be used for creating surface textures as well.
for instance, when pieces a bronze statue are welded together, the seams are then grinded and chaced to make them look the same as the surrounding statue.

Thanks for the suggestion ^^

I have never tried it on Brass or Bronze but I imagine it would work as well... Something for me to look into.

I will. Along with the thought of chemical patinaing.
It'll prove to be an interesting addition ^^
