I didn't totally understand why and how you cut the bird in 4 parts?
Also you say Live Paint vector objects what you do mean with this?

I cut cut the bird up in separate pieces so I could apply separate shadows to the body and to the background. Live paint is a feature in Illustrator CS that allows you to add or change colors to a bitmap object that you've Live Traced.

Ah I understand why you did the cutting! And I found out about LivePaint yesterday or something, just a starter in the world of Illustrator
