Description
UPDATED FILE: Version 1.1 ~ October 7th 2014This tutorial shows you how to make great 3D style marbles like the one above using Ultra Fractal . Topics covered include the basics of 3D Mapping, adding a Glass Hemisphere and how to use further layers and masks to add various highlights and shadows to a sphere.
This tutorial is not recommended for complete beginners (e.g. those who have just downloaded UF and looking for their first tutorial) but if you have at least a little experience and familiarity with the program interface then you should find it quite accessible.
TROUBLE WITH THE PARAMETERS?
- Some users have reported being unable to copy/paste the parameters when reading the tutorial in a web browser.
- This is not a fault in the file.
- Best solution is to download a physical copy of the PDF and open it from your hard drive.
- Adobe Digital Editions has been reported as a good app to use for this. Good old Adobe Reader should work too.
Revision History
- October 31st 2007. Original v1.0 uploaded.
- October 7th 2014. v.1.1: broken links to tutorials on other websites removed, typo corrected.

I'm having trouble with the PDF. I keep getting errors, even after I saved it to my computer instead of viewing it in the browser. Parts of the text/images don't show. I'd really like to finish my marble but as of right now, I can't.
Is there some way you can send me just the text, possibly?

It sounds as though your download is corrupt/incomplete, the DA servers can be a bit iffy at times. Perhaps if you try again later you will have better luck - make sure you save directly from the file link before opening. If all else fails then note me with your email and I will send you a copy of the .pdf privately, I'm afraid I don't have the material in any other form.

I got a bit lost at the 'adding the glass hemisphere' bit, probably because I'm still a beginner!
Great tutorial - thanks!

I worked on it for an hour or so, and I almost finished. The step by step instructions were great!
The whole layers part confuses me... I haven't done the tutorial for that yet. But I almost made it through without a problem, I was impressed. The marble tutorial really helped.

No-one else has mentioned this so I'm presuming your download got corrupted somehow? I would suggest you save the file to your computer and open it from there rather than downloading it directly in your web browser - I've found that the browser method sometimes gives the problem you describe, especially with larger .pdf files. If you have already downloaded/saved the file to your computer then perhaps you should try again for a perfect copy?
I hope this helps. If you don't have any luck in the next day or two then note me with an email address and I'll mail it to you.

Coulda used this ages ago, I had to teach myself. Oh well.
I do have a question though....How do you get the framing on your marbles? I have an idea of how to do it in my mind but I was wondering if there was a simpler technique. Maybe you could do a tutorial on that....
Very nice work...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Velvet--Glove In reply to PimpcessTyna [2007-11-05 12:22:13 +0000 UTC]
Sorry this is a bit late for you, I had to teach myself too.
The framing is not particularly simple, but then few of my fractals are. The box and frame alone, on a typical gift box marble, uses at least 19 layers and masks, sometimes more. The shapes are basically derived from juxtaposing two clipping shapes, if that's what you're thinking of.
I doubt I will be doing a tutorial on this, sorry, it would be far too long!
