Junkbot view 2.0 (new & improved - now with 25% less crazy from the artist)If you didn't get my last ramble, see Junkbot view 1. The above statement will be that much clearer. At any rate, this guy is the first piece that got me into the whole "mechanical sculpture/assemblage" thing. Like all the stuff I've done to date, he's entirely mechanically attached, which makes it tedious as hell finding screws that'll fit, but allows for fairly accurate points of artitculation. I'd say junkbot could replicate 75% of any given human postures, but getting him to stay put is another issue. In making this thing, I started to realize that tensigrity can be a great asset or horrible nightmare. Parts on this guy came mainly from two old computers I had, a sony turntable from, '81 (junkbot is old school), various small screws from said computers, an electric razor, a knife handle i had, mouse ball, and... well, alot of junk as usual, quite frankly. Time on this thing was a couple of weeks, but once I had some major assemblages, things started falling together pretty quick (& sometimes falling off even quicker). He stands a little over 12" depending on head posture. Ach, enough of my rambling, hope you like it or at least get a good chuckle from it. feel free to comment.

Dig it.
Have you ever thought about adding the ability to animate the extremities? Could use a simple Bi-metal strip with electrical current for flex, un-flex movement.

I hadn't thought bimetallics. Usually those are heat driven. I've mullled over motors and memory metal, but wiring and whatnot is something I'd need to study. combined with the fact that I'd have to do some sort of programming on that. Too involved at the moment. Eventually, but not right now. that would take a project that only takes "X" amount of time and turn it into an "X * Y = forever" affair. The memory wires are just too damn expensive at this moment as well. Also, now that I think of it, I'd have to completely rework attachment in some ways. repetitive actions tend to loosen the bolts, so a certain amount of maintenence is always required on these things. With motors, stuff would be falling off allover the place, lol.

lol, Thanks. Great gallery you have there. I figured I'd reciprocate on your fav. Thanx Taika-kim. Hey, how you doing up there with winter coming on? I love nighttime myself, but approx 6 months of it?! I don't know about that. Although, being in texas, I'd trade you your long evening for our hellish summer, lol.

ah yeah the long summer nights <3<3 The sun goes down(ish) at around 2300 hours, and comes up at around 4 or 5... And of course in the north it doesn't go down at all for a few months in the summer
But right now I'm quite happy with the snow coming, it beats the usual black november weather... Altough lately the winters have been pretty pathetic
So yeah I like winter, except that instead of the 4 or 5 months it takes here in the south, I could live with 8 weeks or so!

lol, Yes, here were in full autumn glory (hit friggin 88 today. yeah, you read that right, freakin' 88 ( 31 deg cel.)Keep forgetting you are in europe, lol). I mean, I grew up 30 miles north of NY city, so by now it's 0 deg cel in the evening and maybe 7-14 deg cel during the day up there on average. But 31 deg?! WTF. That's the only thing I hate about this state. I miss cold, windy, rainy and depressing. "I'm only happy when it rains", to quote Shirley Manson (Another cool European now that I think about it)

lol, thanx. I see your characters have fashion sense similar to my art... uh, well, sense isn't the word I'd use, but you get the Idea. Thanx for viewing & posting. Cool work with the Jim model. (It is amazing what one can do with a VCR, innit?) Keep an eye out, I've a few more things floating around that i need to post as time goes on. (&some ideas i need to start working on.) Bye.

Sweet, I look forward to seeing more of your stuff.
I just got ahold of a broken TV, VCR, and some other junk to take apart so I'm hoping to do more sculpture soon too. This stuff is way too fun.

Hey now, cool deal. Oh, Btw, with a tv, there's all sorts of electronic coolness in there, but a real interestin' part can be found inside the crt (cathode ray tube). when you pop open the tv the actual screen glass is all encased and tapers back to a fairly thin cylinder. inside the glass of said cylinder is a metal part (it's fragile) that I Believe fires the electrons at the screen to produce an image. @ any rate, getting that out is tricky. you can't pop a crt with normal means from the front (i whacked one 5-6 times with a hammer @ 1/2 strength. not even a dent.) but if you pop it with a sharp hit right where that cylinder starts to protrude at the back of the glass, you should be able to break it free without too much damage. WARNING!! do this outside. the inside of a crt is a vacuum, so it implodes when you pop it. itdoesn' collapse everything but there is a rush of air (theoretically it could collapse, never seen it happen) on top of that the chemicals inside the screen aren't exctly health friendly from what I've read. not to mention sharp glass. I know this holds true for comp monitors, & a normal tv can't be much different. Happy smashing!!

No prob. just be careful. I open myself up and worse everytime I make something; of course, I'm also an idiot so that might explain why, lol. Bust that CRT in a well ventilated are and get rid of the glass housing after you extract that component. theres also some heavy shaped/laquered copper wire, magnets and other cool stuff.
