Description
Note: Due to other things going on in my life (work, cars, video games, hanging out with friends, etc), work on this project has essentially ceased. The Super Turbo Tango Patcher is a mostly self-explanatory graphical wizard designed to make simple the process of modifying your system files with resources developed and inspired by the Tango Desktop Project. It currently includes implementations of the basic Tango icon set, the Tangerine icon set developed by the Ubuntu art team, the Industrial icon set from recent SUSE/Novell desktop Linux releases, and the Gnome icon theme, rounded out with various pieces of artwork created by myself and others. Additionally, it includes a reloader module to re-modify your files if they are overwritten, allowing system updates to be performed without breaking the theme. If you experience issues with the Patcher, please consult the included documentation.
It is designed to work on all language versions and editions of Windows XP and Server 2003. 64-bit versions of Windows are NOT supported.
As this is DeviantArt, your feedback, good or bad, will make this beast all the better. Many thanks to those who've volunteered opinions, chances are you either helped development along, or incremented by one my ego counter
Last update (2008/06/15): Split the applications portion out into a separate patcher, since it'll work just fine on Vista, and even X64 (providing you haven't gone and found special 64-bit versions of things), replaced my crappy WiMP icon with the icon from Totem, add comctl32.dll locations for SP3, work around the multiple-notepad.exe business in a better way, optionally extract source code to the patcher directory, added /bootsplash=[0=off|1=on] command-line parameter, and check for Vista and don't run on it.
Note that applications are no longer included in the "system" patcher - they have been moved into a separate package, available here .
If you receive a warning from your antivirus program about WFPdisable.exe, it is safe to ignore. Because of what the program does (disables WFP, which will complain about and attempt to undo changes system files), your AV software likely considers it dangerous. It's technically not a false positive per se, since it's correctly detecting what it is and acting appropriately, but WFP is re-enabled after a reboot, and it reduces the number of complaints from WFP dialogs (so I can't win - it's either complaints about WFP dialogs or complaints about antivirus detection.)
If you're using Windows Vista, you maybe be interested in STTP 6000 .

After downloading it, I scan the file with Avast 4.8 and It detects Malware on the file:
Tango Patcher 2600 [link] \$WINDIR\Tango Patcher 2600\Tools\wfpdisable.exe
Name of the Malware: Win32:Wfpdisabler [Tool]

Any Chance that you could put up your old WiMP icon? I actually preferred that one, and would like to continue to use it.

A while back, I was actually talking to one of the devs about just doing stuff right into the tree. Of course, that was right before they broke it for VMware users, and I got a job, so it got pushed aside in a big way.
Of course, there's still a few decades before ReactOS becomes usable even for basic stuff, so I've got plenty of time...

I really love this Tango pack. Makes Windows look much better.
However I am having problems getting Firefox 3.0.1 to be Tangoed up. I've tried Firefox in three different locations, Program Files\Firefox, Program Files\Mozilla Firefox and Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox but Tango never changes the icons for it when I reboot. Is this because Tango 8.06 isn't set to recognise Firefox 3?

Thanks for updating for SP3! This patcher makes me so happy. I hate messing around with icons. It is the most tedious and boring part of customizing XP to me. Having the patcher do all the work just makes me smile.

It seems like some people have had no problems with SP3. Should I assume that it will be safe to upgrade? -Thanks

Everything that's out works fine on SP3 - the filepicker dialogs aren't skinned, but there aren't any other errata I know of.

It seems that you built the exe with NSIS. Can you release the .nsi files. I want to make a Super Bluecurve Patcher. So you will be appreciated if you release the .nsi files.

Instaled SP3, made a reload of the patcher and all is ok on 2 computers so far.
3rd PC will be next week because I can't upgrade it yet to SP3, too much important info in it.
Anyway all went ok around here.

Just to test it out I installed it on a XP SP3 system. When I reboot it says the NTOSKRNL.EXE is currupted so they I couldn't get into windows. I think there are some differences you need to check out on the next version.

Odd - it might be worth checking out, but I think you might be an isolated incident, as it's been working fine without modifications in virtual machines and on my notebook.

I installed it right after a fresh XP install with SP3. I dunno maybe I'll try it again but do you have any insight why the Tango Patcher would currupt the NTOSKRNL.EXE?

I really don't... but hex editing is a really finicky thing. I've been contemplating for a while now not bothering anymore with a boot screen, it's really more trouble than it's worth, even if the nuked installs are sporadic...

tvnca In reply to vertigosity [2008-05-02 06:54:09 +0000 UTC]
I even replaced the modified ntoskrnl.exe with the original one using system recovery, still wouldn't boot so something funky is going on.
Installing without the replaced bootscreen option works, maybe for the next version instead of scrapping it make it an option that is unchecked as default and if user checks it you could give a warning to the user of the risks. Because some ppl might not be technical enough to know how to fix their computer if it hoses it.

Meh, having to copy and paste this every few weeks gets a bit old... oh well, it's either that, or "omg I installed this and now I have WFP dialogs!"
"Many antivirus programs have WFPdisable in their database since WFPdisable (temporarily) disables Windows File Protection, which can make it easier to overwrite system files. It's not a false positive per se, but it's also not anything to be worried about."

MaxFragg In reply to aYone [2008-04-27 15:53:36 +0000 UTC]
clearly not, the patcher works on the systemfiles which might look like virus behaviour for some scanners, but it contains no virus

vertigosity In reply to aLTuu [2008-04-26 03:58:28 +0000 UTC]
Yep. I'll need to spin a new build to support the filepicker browser's toolbar, but aside from that there is no difference between SP2 and SP3.

Take a look at the documentation CHM - it'll at least get you started on trying to troubleshoot it and/or give me enough of the right information to track it down.
