Page 18 of a comic strip I am working on that is set in ancient Rome and is about the early life of Gaius Julius Caesar.The faces in the alcoves in the wall behind Caesar in the first panel are the wax imagines (singular: imago) of Caesarβs ancestors. All Roman aristocrats had them, and when a member of that family died, actors were hired to wear the wax masks during the funeral procession. Of course, being Ancient Rome, it was only the faces of the male ancestors that were made (the only female in Rome who was entitled to have imagines made of her was the Chief Vestal Virgin).

Nice comic! The wax imagines were a great touch.
I like how Aurelia looks... she's very Roman. It just goes to show how much the standards of beauty change.
