Description
A visual time line of the evolutionary periods of FOIL development through over a century of FOIL warfare from...1st generational period: Inception
2nd generational period: Development
3rd generational period: Development (continued) and Experimentation
4th generational period: Refinement
5th generational period: Final evolution stage (shortest period and occurring in the time line of the TKP TV series story arc)
I've meant to do a lineup for some time, if nothing else, to get a sense of scale between the behemoth FOILjaeger Gottheitzerstorer and the standard combat FOILs. Doing a timeline that shows the aesthetic evolution of the concepts seemed like a cool idea. I would have added more of the other designs that fellow DA illustrators have contributed (the big guy is designed by and I did the paints so I have a hi-res of this one) but I don't have hi-res files of all of those as yet. Possibly in the future I will whip up more of these and I'll add more information later. For now, I hope fans of the FOILs will enjoy this. More to come...
Cheers!
02/11/2010: Submitted to I should have added this one earlier. Line-ups like this are always cool to see

How much does a commissioned piece like this one cost?

The Mechs are OK, but their names sounds strange to a german like me:
Herzin Flüg = Did you mean 'Flying Heart'?
Gottheitzerstörer = Is it 'Destroyer of god' or 'God of all destroyer'?
'Sturmgeist' sounds good!

My thanks for the comments!
Yeah some of the names are gibberish or mutant German-ish so they would sound pretty weird to a German speaker. In the setting for the story human history is incredibly fractured, even more so than are notion of history today. What records did survive are mined for the formation of the current culture, therefore mutations and inconsistencies such as this. There's no longer a Germany, nor even an Earth but all kinds of fragmented ideas and pieces of culture remain. Some of it is us having fun (little tongue in cheek) and some just to add some strangeness to the broken history.
The Gottheitzerstörer was named by , who is Swedish. If I recall he said it roughly meant 'Destroyer of Divinity' which is pretty much the same thing you're noting here.

Really impressive artwork...
but i'm not sure about the mecha names...should those be german words ?
Because if its meant to be so, you've made some funny mistakes ^^

LOL
Indeed you're right, there are some tongue and cheek mutant/fake/fictional German-ish words mixed with some real ones (also mixed up Greek and other languages). It's, more or less, an homage to the hardcore Japanese mecha modeling crowd as they tend to do oddball stuff like that too.
Beyond that there's actually some reasons in the story narrative as well though. Without going too detailed I'll simply say humanity has a very mixed up picture of their history (in the story narrative) so you might find odd combinations of real and mixed up words like this. Just having fun with it really
My thanks for the kind words and comments

Okay...that makes sense...in a way...
But anyway, "strum" sounds terribly wrong...for german ears ^^
The correct german notation would be "sturm"
Sturmgeist -> stormghost
Sturmblatt -> stormleaf
but
Oma-Quattro
-> granny (the)four
-> granny (the)pair
sounds a bit odd for me...just my to cents

Sorry for the delayed reply, just been crazy busy.
Thank you so much for the kind words man, I appreciate it. I had meant to do one of these for some time and when I finally did it seemed everyone really dug it.
Yeah, it takes time and practice but isn't anything others can't achieve. Just keep working at it and never let your imagination falter, keep feeding it
Cool everyone has enjoyed this. I will likely do more like this in the future for sure

Very awesome. I rather like the earlier ones a bit better, but they're all very neat designs.

It is from right here More precisely it's all original designs, by my studio and associates, and this is the first posting of this line up.

Oh sweet God.. YES! Nothing beats a powerhouse lineup like this.
In one glimpse it's an onslaught of accumulated goodness. So much fun for the eye to dart around and compare. The diversity of design coupled w/ a linear stylistic progression... just love it.
Assembling a solid line up like this is a real achievement. A bold account of the legions you've painstakingly developed. Sort of a milestone marker in the long road of the TKP project. And of course, these guys just scratch the surface, but grouped this way they signify the vastness and detail of the world you're creating.
Almost has a seven samurai sort of effect: So many individual stories summoned in one image.

Again glad you dug this I have wanted to do one for some time, just been busy with all kinds of other stuff. These kind of things are always just cool to see and do bring a sense of unity and progression to a collection of designs like this. There's quite a lot of designs now and there has been a clear visual evolution. I felt rather than say, this design is obsolete, this cannon it would be more interesting to look at the whole thing as part of the design time line. The 5th generation period is the only time that occurs in the show but all the back story is always something that helps inform your narrative so long as it's all clearly mapped out. There will be older FOILs still in service so the time line is relevant indeed
Seven Samurai, good thing to evoke indeed.

Always loved Karl's line ups as well. Any time you've got the inventory sitting around, it pays to just format them all together for a group ogling. All the hard work has been done anyway, so it's just a matter of some presentation design. Big return for previous time investment.
It makes sense that some older Foil designs would still be hanging around w/ later generations. Historically, certain weapons of war have a tendency to linger well past their prime. Like the Russian tanks of Saddam's army (w/ hand cranked turrets) squaring off against fully computerized M1 Abrams in the first Gulf War. Any lesser powers in the TKP world might be in the same boat. And for a weapon like FOILs that have a certain personality and autonomy, the idea of an obsolete veteran struggling to stay viable with endless modern upgrades and augmentations is kinda cool.

I suppose they never looked back on the 3rd-gen Gottheitzerstörer given the disproportionate costs vs. benefits?
Very cool lineup of your own machines, Mike. I would guess you spent some time figuring out the relative scales of these fellas while composing them on the same page.

The Gottheitzerstörer was actually banned from combat after an incident where one went crazy and wiped out an entire city state. Cost, not so much the issue, wiping out a city... probably.
My thanks. Aye, the FOILs are typically in the range of 40 feet high, give or take, so they're sizable enough. Going back to FSS as a comparison FOILs are similar in size to Mortar Headds, if I recall their height correctly. So going by this you can see the Gottheitzerstörer is a massive beast.

I'd imagine, given that FOIL's Hulk-like arms and its over-built drive system.
However, I'd never flip a coin to decide who'd win between the Gottheitzerstörer and the Jagd Mirage , distance combat at the least. Just look at that MH's huge Twin Tower cannons and its specs! Throw in a few support mechs on either side and you'd have quite the party.
