Description
Funny how one thing can end up something entirely different when you’re producing it. Originally this piece was to be a speed paint, I planned to do yesterday, of an F-15 with a refueling arm attached (Needless to say not really a speed paint now but still completed in the past twos days time). While looking at the photo I planned to ref I thought, “This would be way cool if I made it a Valkyrie from Macross instead”, and this is what happened. The PSD file does have a refueling arm version as well and I may post it but ultimately I omitted it because it was too similar of color (the one thing I did keep from the F-15 ref was the colors, I ditched the angle of the plane and the rest). I liked the military gray the F-15 had so the VF-1S got it too. It's also kinda funny how, after all this time, this is the first Macross art I've ever done and I came to love animation watching Robotech in the 80s. Well Mr. Shoji Kawamori, I tip my hat to you, the Valkyrie is STILL a cool design.Straight to Wacom digital paint, Photoshop 7.0 and some touch up work in Painter 9

Good choice of tones for the shading.

My thanks Yup, pretty much one of those left turns at Alberkerky and boom I end up with a Valkyrie instead of an F-15. At some point I'll have to do a Batteroid or gerwalk mode, someday

Thanks Yeah this one I did when I was really just getting into the swing of doing full paints on the Wacom so it's not without a bit of wonkiness. It was fun doing though and turned out well enough for getting a feel for direct digital paints.

I can see how it might look that way in a thumb, I cropped the painting rather close, just thought it would be interesting to approach it that way. Thanks for dropping in though.

Very cool!
Two issues that I believe myself to see is certain perspective errors and the shading is a bit flat - could have higher contrasts.

Macross! AAAAAA!
!!!!!
Magnificent work! I'm not going to go all fanboy detailing-asshole on you, because I think you've done a great job bringing a classic back to life.
The only issue I'd address would simply be the composition. I think adding more to the left side, and putting Roy near the center axis a little more (but still off center) would create more balance and create a little more of a focal point. Just saying! This is still definately a favourite.

Thank you much, I really enjoyed working on this one You are right, it should have the 'skull' on it. I was thinking it would be on the cockpit armor when it changed to batteroid mode so you don't see it here. I might add one on the tail fin when I go in and do some edits on the wing and such

He is right though, it is a bit off but thanks for the support man, glad it hits the spot as far as the void of Macross art is concerned. At some poit I'll have to do the Batteroid mode too.

The wing's not aligned I reckon. It looks like the left wing is a bit further back along the fuselage compared to the right one. I tried drawing imaginary lines according to perspectives and they aren't parallel in placement. It also looks like the left is shorter in span than the right but according to perspectives (especially if you want to exaggerate them) it should be the other way around.
The texture rendering is superb as usual, sometimes I prefer a painted look but getting a realistic lighting and feel to it has always been something I'm in awe of.
The pilot should be a bit bigger, making the cockpit feel more confined. For ideal aesthetics if not for realism. The background could've been much more inspiring too I guess. Since we're viewing from a high angle it'd be more interesting to see a landscape or a seascape instead of a plain sky. The current background is not showing much dynamism or speed, I don't think that's what you wanted to emphasise anyway so it could use a much more interesting background.
The best bit is the canopy reflection and bias. Do you just "know" how and where to place em' or do you use references for it? Is there a specific technique you use to accomplish this, which I hope you can share with everyone?

Yup, the plane's not perfect, it's a bit off but seeing as I just started it as more of a Wacom sketch I eyeballed and then tightened it up I'm happy with how it turned out for the most part. As I said in the post I planned to just do a speed paint, just decided to pimp it a bit more. I can fix the wing though, might go in there and move it so thanks for the catch
For the most part the image is similar to the photo of the F-15. The BG was just a blue sky with some sparse clouds and actually I liked that as the plane is the focus, not the BG. In the photo, as with many photos you see of aircraft at high altitude, you don't and won't get any sense of speed, just an eerie sense of it hanging it the air, even if it's going over 400 mph. That said maybe I'll go in and add a vapor trail off the afterburners and some vapor trails in there to indicate movement, it is a painting after all and that wouldn't hurt on the pilot, yeah, I actually just did it from a photo of a Model of a Valkyrie as I had to look at one to get the plane down, I don't think the cockpit is scaled as a normal fighter is, that's how the kit was anyway. The reflection on the windshield is similar to what was in the F-15 photo but I kinda just did my thing so a little "knowing" and a little looking.
