Description
Here are more quick rough layout illos, most of which are done at the ole' laundromatThe top frame we have a sendai sitting in an Omnisense tap room. I suppose you could equate this, in some sense, as a form of hacker but really in this setting it's not quite the same thing. Omnisense is a SOL wide network of information and monitoring systems so for those that want to move freely and discreetly one has to be tapped into it. Also there are layers of encrypted information so tapping in (the hacking) benefits for intel, depending on what you're looking for, as well.
The frame below is pretty obvious, just a little rough illo of a sendai buying some aftermarket modifications at a rather questionable little shop, also run by sendai.
Both illos were initially blue colored pencil and then digital color in Photoshop CS3

I love this because you managed to make it surrealistic and so familiar and habitual for us at the same time!

Thanks, very, very appreciated as that was much of the intent. It is a rather surreal setting and at the same time both familiar and full of a sense of character, both with the inhabitants and the environment they exist in

Really cool, these concepts bring a lot of character to the series of environments.
I love that the computer operator is wearing a tie and suspenders. The bottom scene reminds me of the marketplace from the Ghost in the Shell manga in such a good way. Oh and the wide heads are the best

Thanks Nick, I'm glad you're digging these as you can see the tip of the iceberg as to what I was talking about. Though these creatures are strange looking bio-mechanical entities they also have strangely familiar, almost human quirks and traits.
I dig the Omnisense tapper sendai too He has quite the bank of difference engines crunching away at who knows what XD
The GitS market, yeah not a bad comparison. We'll have a lot of sendai hocking their wares both on Indus and Polemos so we'll see markets and shops a plenty.

Aye, unnerving it can be, no?
They're actually more a form of bio-mechanical life form so not so much robots but the visual effect comes off much the same in the end

Wonderful! Great color, great lighting, both on these and your other set. The use of spot color in the eyes really pulls it together. Without the spot color, I would say that they are over-detailed. The spot color provides a focus, however. How did you achieve the effect of a transition through that lavender color towards the light areas? It's quite effective. It's also great to see rough drawings used like that: pulled in to Photoshop , toned and finished.
I wonder if you could explore the idea of lost-and-found edges a little more. What I mean is that, as your roughs are drawn freehand they provide a "soft" edge which gives the impression of rounded-ness. A hard edge drawn with a straightedge in strict perspective would be an additional device to focus attention. Only used selectively, of course. In the top image, for instance, if you put a hard edge on the front side of the window behind the seated character it would contrast with the soft edge of the rear side of the window. The effect would be to increase the impression of depth and to help frame the character.

My thanks Tom
It's funny you note lost and found edges as I actually did play with that to a degree on both of the posted sheets (painting hard lines and highlights on a layer over the rough colored pencil layer. helps pop things a bit). It's something I can see experimenting with further so long as I keep the process fast, which so far it is with these.
Indeed the top frame, with the little sendai fella in his bank 'o' difference engines, is rather full of details but that was something I really wanted to get across so you're spot on as to my reasoning for throwing color on these roughs. Doing so does break up the details and ties the focus into a more unified end result... and I really wanted his room to be full of stuff
On the lavender transitions I obviously wanted to keep these in a cool color range so it was a good choice in that sense. Beyond that though, as I'm sure you're more than aware shadows tend to have a hazy halo on the edge where it transitions from dark to saturated light (most notable in direct sunlight shadows) so I also added a little lavender/scarlet around the shadow edges to create the illusion of that transition and it's also just visually pleasing.
I have done tons of these roughs, just been gradual on posting them. They're a ton of fun to do so I've been having a blast experimenting with them as to doing these semi polish Photoshop roughs. You're so right on this aspect of the digital age, there's a lot of freedom to explore.
Thanks again

Details from Omnisense gat me a huge smile!
(sorry for awefull english )
Those 4 shots in those 2 last boards are nice. Great atmosphere. Also like the "neon" style lighting, soft and intimate, with a slight touch of hi-tech feel. The social background looks interessing. And sendai designs are awesome as usual. Hey btw, wondering why you choosed "sendai". I'm confused about the precise significance. Sounds like a japanese word, which means something like "previous boss", or "previous master" or something. Is it so?

Thanks man, glad you dig em
Sendai was actually an unintentional coincidence that it's the same as the Japanese word Sendai (the name of a major Japanese city and originally meaning "A thousand generations" but later to mean "hermit on a platform" which both are oddly apt). Initially I came up with sendai as a general blanket terms for the bio-mechanical creatures in the story, sendai played off sadus (saedai), taedus (taedai), faedai, etc.

Still about sendai: oh OK. Guess you gat it from Gibson's Neuromancer? (ono-sendai cyberspaces 7) ???
Guess so. Makes more sense like this.

Nope but also an interesting thing to know regarding Neuromancer (been ages since reading it). Synchronicity can be an odd thing.

Cool! I have no idea whatsoever of what you're talking about! Haha!
My only guess is that these two pictures you've submitted must have quit a nice background story! I've been browsing a lil back into your gallery trying to find answers about the story, but couldn't (maybe a lil lazy here, hehe) satisfy my curiosity... Care to tell me more about it?
I really like these two : Theos 10 and Theos 09 : they have a stronger science-faction nature, robots and those nice sketchy lines I love!
Thanx for sharing your designs Mike!

My thanks, I'm glad they pulled you in even without having any notion of what the context is. Always a good thing to accomplish in snap images.
The short of what the these images are about and for is an animated TV series pitch package about a metaphysical war in a mysterious future setting. The sendai are bio-mechanical life forms and heavily populate the setting with their human creators.
Indeed there are scraps of info in the galleries and there will be only so much I plan to reveal... for now
