Description Again a happy beginning to 2009 to all of you! Here's a new batch of rough Theos environment concepts done with colored pencil and everyone's fav pal Photo of the shop. I posted 3 other rough art board batches in scraps so feel free to give them a look as well. I'm posting this one as a deviation, again to alert watchers this stuff often ends up and scraps and because this one is a bit more finished out. I had fun doing the color wash for these but they are still definitely rough quick concept sketches.

Once again all scenes on planet Polemos:

The top frame is a border outpost built into the side of a mountain. Clearly defended by at least one heavy shettier pillbox, likely more off camera.

The middle frame a factory of Besh-Gund conglomerate at night. Besh makes wall-riders for Indus (soon to show up in the galleries) and vehicles for Polemos.

The bottom frame a lone deco-ish vehicle on a stretch of dirty road.

Colored pencil illustrations with digital paint wash in Photoshop CS3

There will be more to come including some pending full paint FOILs.

Cheers!

My thanks again. I'm glad everyone has been enjoying these as they're quickies simply designed to get to the ideas quickly yet, hopefully, still pack some oomph visually.

Aye. I intend to keep doing the quick stuff along with the more polished stuff. Ideas tend to come outta nowhere and quickly so getting them down fast is important.

both quick and polished each have their own charm

and getting stuff quickly to paper is important, i hate it when i forget ideas

There was a motto for a tour in the city, "Besh-Gund in sixty seconds". Many tourists did not like it but for some reason business folk loved it. No time to waste fumbling through the city for the areas of interest.

There was also a popular love song "Besh-Gund Baby Besh-Gund".

Great job with these.

The 'industrial villa' look of the Besh-Gund factory stands out for me. Gives new meaning to the term 'cottage industry.'

Good to see you drop in man Aye, it does have that vibe and that's kinda the feel Polemos has in some places. It's a mix of quaint picturesque locales mixed with war and industry ever present to break up the sense of peacefulness.

Very awesome!
I must agree, there are some Ghibli qualities in here, which I like very much.

Well, I'm using an approach that's sorta similar; light washes of color with rough layout sketches. So yeah, to a degree it comes off Ghibli-esque and def some of that work and Kenichi Yoshida's (ex Ghibli now with Bones. Eureka Seven character designer) work on King Gainer got me interested in cracking out some traditional media more frequently. Ultimately I do the work my way so I hope it's more Vulne Pro in the end as I'm not attempting to directly emulate anyone Thanks for the comments

I like interesting styles like that, actually. Plus, I also like the old-school anime style, too Any time there are mechs or futuristic machinery, it has a cooler effect, it seems. And traditional work is always nice

Aye, I'm def old school in more ways than one LOL I grew up on the classic 80s anime, the really good stuff, so it all had a big impact on my love for this medium. Stuff like The Wings of Honneamise Royal Space Force, Crusher Joe, Venus Wars, Akira, old school Miyazaki ala Nausicaa and Laputa all really made me fall in love with the possibilities of this medium and they are really endless.

This project is, in many ways, my love note to those old classic films and shows along with a lot of very new ideas. I'm pretty bored with a lot of the current anime (thought there are still some good projects here and there) so I have no interest in following a lot of the tired cliche's being run into the ground. The plan is to do something familiar but very different. Hopefully that will continue to be apparent as more work goes up Thanks a lot man!

Please, I beg of you. I wish one thing and one thing only. Just remember to please, please, PLEASE... make it cooler than Naruto!

VulnePro In reply to X-A-N-A [2009-01-08 06:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Well I can tell you it's def not like Naruto, no question there. Though I have not seen all of Naruto I have a good enough idea to know Theos is nothing like it. Cooler? Well that will be for you guys, the eventual audience, to decide. Overall I can say what we have in mind would likely be hip without being "hip" and I hope will simply be cool because we have a damn good story to tell and a visually engaging setting to let it unfold in.

So we plan to try to make it stand out from the crowd. Theos will have a gritty edge to it, I don't plan for us to pull any punches if we can help it. For now I will continue to share peeks into this project.
