Description
And that next set of rough layouts for Indus locales that I noted pending in the last post. Here we have a well lit "nice" part of town. Clearly this location is not quite as gloomy as many of the others but still we're lacking a sense of welcoming brightness that sunlight would provide. Places like this are somewhat typical in being oasis points of light and activity. Poking endlessly upward and downward are modular buildings with copious stacks of machinery, generators, pipes, ducts (ahh Brazil, we'll never think of ducts the same again XD), cooling, heating, mysterious purposes, etc. Indus simply is a maze of buildings and though most of Indus is artificial in this fashion there are indeed some places that are more open and brighter.
The next shot is just one of many homes on Indus. To the left a gel plasma Neus screen showing some footage of Polemos's Besh plant. Again not so brightly lit but somehow homey in it's own way.
These are a bit more rough in execution than the last batch (especially the bottom shot. The fish eye was an eyeballed hand drawn approach. Not perfect but turned out nice overall) but with the added color they have much the same feel of more polished BGs. All 5 of the new posted environment collection are to explore and display the atmospheric nature of the planet Indus and being an environment shrouded in shadow it also enhances the palpable sense of mystery the place has. Indus is an enigma.
I had a lot of fun with these and yes there are more to come along with some delayed FOIL and other goodies. Thanks for looking

makes me wanna go watch blade runner, 5th element, Akira, and heavy metal back to back to back to back to back to... did I already say to back?
Excellent subtleties in the lighting and depth. Also Brazil movie comes to mind.

Indeed once you do a futuristic city with lots of atmospheric lighting you evoke those films, and that's not a bad thing really. All those films defined the way we come to expect the future will look but when you come down to it most real modern cities look this way at night. Shinjuku Japan and pretty much all of Hong Kong might as well be Blade Runner Thanks for the comment.

Again a big thanks The fish eye isn't perfect as I just spontaneously riffed it out by hand but still effective.

Instant
This is an awesome environment design. You perfectly understand at first sight the kind of atmosphere, the aesthetics, even can imagine the kind of people you could meet wandering in that streets and alleys.
Really good work.

My thanks for the very kind words and thank you for the fav I'm happy this comes across as I'm keenly aware of the importance of aesthetics and even more importantly the sense of livability, that people could live there. Sci-fi environment all too often fail at this with overly sterile cliche' "sci-fi" cities and locales. These rarely look like real cities or places people would actually live. Ironically as threatening as these dark environments might seem they also look like any number of real cities we live in today.
So you bet I'm very focused on this concept as I feel it's important to sell the illusion.
Thanks again!
