Uru is a unique king in pridelander history. Tragically after giving birth to Uru and Uzima, Mohatu's beloved mate Hatima died. Uru's early life in the Pridelands was quite lonely. King Mohatu was very stressed over alliances with other territories and the current conflict between Hyenas. Due to this he wanted to assure if anything were to happen to him, Uru and her betrothal would take his place and rule just as he envisioned. With that said, she took royal lessons seriously and never complained. This limited her time playing with other cubs, making Uru horrible with social cues and interactions. The only other cubs she had time to interact with were with Uzima and Ahadi, who had to join these royal lessons. Ahadi was a prince from the Eastern Sun pride who she was betrothed to as a political agreement. As Mohatu told them the stories of the Great Kings of the past, Uru asked if she could be a great king too, not a queen, and surprisingly enough Mohatu loved that idea.

As Uru grew up into adulthood, feelings about herself were changing. A beautiful mane grew and everyone was in awe. It was extremely rare for a lioness to grow a mane and for Uru’s to be so dark had everyone stunned. Her body also was quite large compared to others, this was likely because of Mohatu’s genes. Then one day a miracle happened. Uru finally became pregnant after so many attempts with no results. During the time of carrying the future heirs is when Uru realized something. Some days they really didn’t feel comfortable with being a girl. Uru wanted to be a King! They wanted to be known as a father, not a mother. It was hard for Uru to explain, turns out gender wasn’t that simple. Ahadi was very loving and supportive of Uru’s gender musing, as he loved Uru no matter their gender. Ahadi easily adjusted with Uru wanting to some days be called male or female.  Uru and Ahadi announced that once the cubs were born, that both of them would be referred to as fathers of the cubs.

Uru’s suffering having to bear children was finally over, Mufasa and Unataka were finally born without trouble. Mohatu demanded the shaman to be around at all times, fearing the same demise as his beloved would happen again.  To his relief, Uru and the two cubs were perfectly fine. The moment of happiness was short lived as when Mufasa and Unataka were only a season old, Mohatu died from a cobra bite. Uru and Ahadi were officially the Kings of the Pridelands. All those years of Mohatu stressing the importance of his legacy was settling in. Uru focused nearly all attention on the happiness of the animals in their kingdom while Ahadi had to handle neighboring alliances and conflicts. This meant there was little time for the royal cubs, leading to their vices. Mufasa was known for being an arrogant hotshot and Unataka’s cruel behavior were being left unattended.

The kings felt bad for being distant to their cubs. Uru was met with a harsh reality; he didn’t know how to personally raise cubs. All the lionesses took care of him when he was young and assumed that it would be fine for Mufasa and Unataka to have the same treatment. The brothers would argue dailly. Uru was given a quick solution. New playmates. The Oasis pride refugees brought Sarabi, who quickly got along with Mufasa. Ahadi’s childhood friend begged for his mate and cub to be welcomed. The cub, Umoja , was a perfect match for Unataka. All these new faces helped distract the boys from their troubling relationship.

Much to Unataka’s dismay, Mufasa had more opportunities for good memories with their fathers. Royal lessons were something Mufasa cherished dearly. It wasn’t very often but those moments of peace being with his fathers helped Mufasa become more humble. Soon the royal cubs became teens and then young adults. It happened so fast. Uru didn’t get a chance to really cherish those moments with his beloved sons. He hardly knew anything about their personal lives. At most he knew the betrothal between Mufasa and Sarabi was going smoothly and Unataka, now going by the name Scar after the Lion Guard exile, had Umoja.

Over time Uru noticed something odd about Ahadi, something he couldn’t quite figure out. Despite all the food and water they have, one could see Ahadi’s bones. He was drastically losing weight and simply walking to the watering hole was painful. Uru brought the shamans to him for help but even they were unsure of what was the cause. All they could do was aid Ahadi in these daily needs. Mufasa took notice of these issues too and no longer spent his days goofing off, instead he focused and got his act together in order to help Uru run the kingdom and take care of Ahadi. Scar noticed too but in a twisted way,  fearing the same fate could happen to him one day, as he already looked so much like this sickly king.

Uru went to sleep every night snuggling up to his partner, hoping for the illness to stop. Instead the king woke to his greatest fear. Ahadi was gone. Joining the great kings above. His heart was completely shattered. The one lion who understood him was gone. Uru tried to rule as sole king, despite all the work, all he longed for was to feel happy. One night he really wanted to spend time with his sons, believing that would bring some joy. Mufasa and Scar agreed to go stargazing. The night was going well until Mufasa made an uncalled for comment that upset Scar, causing an argument. Uru roared out, ending the fight before any more harsh words were said. As Uru laid in the den that night, all he could do was long for his dear Ahadi and the concept of a good relationship with his sons. The next morning, however… Uru didn’t wake. He died from a broken heart.

FINALLY made an Uru reference sheet. This has been in my WIP folder for over 3 months. I'm so happy I was able to finish this. I've drawn Uru a few times, so it's known my Uru is a maned lioness, but this is the first time I brought attention to them being AFAB genderfluid. Uru is happy with any pronoun, though she/her is often when dealing with neighboring prides. Everyone of their pride uses he/him or they/them.
