Whenever Sophia posted a picture of herself on FaceSpace, she got responses in both English and German. She enjoyed the English comments, which were in-jokes, displays of affection, and her newly made US friends reminiscing about good times they shared together. But the comments in German were getting increasingly hard to read. Mainly they were her friends and family back in Austria freaking out about her about her weight.

She resented the constant, unwelcome reminders from home. There were so many more important thoughts she had to juggle as she adjusted to a new culture, attended her first college classes, and forged new social bonds. Compared to that, did a few more kilos around her middle really matter? Why did they want to add more stress to her life? It was just making the situation worse. Processed food was cheap and ubiquitous in America, and Sophia turned to it often for comfort.

Her body reflected this. Her legs and especially her butt were getting chunky. Pants fit tight around the seat and she was having more trouble with buttoning them as her waist grew. Her stomach poked out a little now. She hated the way it jiggled fattily when she took the stairs, so she started using the elevator instead.

It wasn't that bad though. Sofia was still the slimmest girl of her friends on campus. She took a sidelong glance at the way Heather's love handles bulged over the sides of her sweats as she studied her anthropology textbook. She looked at how Heather's belly peeked out from under her t-shirt and rested heavily in her lap. Sophia was determined not to let herself go that far, mainly because she didn't want to read what the replies would be like in German.
