My first attempt at marquetry. I've spent the last 4 months working off and on with this project. Originally it was to be the front panel of a trunk I was building, but after I spent so much time with the veneer I decided to make it a picture instead. It's all figured wood on a 24" X 48" X 1/2" plywood substrate. The woods are pommeled sapele and fiddleback Maple, with a purpleheart frame. I bookmatched the maple to give the sunburst a 3D look which doesn't translate well on film. The piece was finished with clear varnish. There is no finish on the frame - just paste wax. My favorite part about this piece is the way the sapele that circles the sunburst reflects light as you walk by it.
