Description My first attempt at marquetry. I've spent the last 4 months working off and on with this project. Originally it was to be the front panel of a trunk I was building, but after I spent so much time with the veneer I decided to make it a picture instead. It's all figured wood on a 24" X 48" X 1/2" plywood substrate. The woods are pommeled sapele and fiddleback Maple, with a purpleheart frame. I bookmatched the maple to give the sunburst a 3D look which doesn't translate well on film. The piece was finished with clear varnish. There is no finish on the frame - just paste wax. My favorite part about this piece is the way the sapele that circles the sunburst reflects light as you walk by it.

The maple's gorgeous and I've never seen sapele look so good!
When I first looked I thought it was satinwood, I've never been a lover of figured maple but I'm now coverted to fiddleback maple (Still hate bird's eys maple though!)
The purpleheart seems to fade into insignificance in the photo though because it's not laquered - is it more vibrant in real life? Photo's can really tell lies!

Well show me some - I think what put me off was seeing the basement restaurant/cafeteria or whatever is was in Leeds (UK) Town Hall years ago. I can't remember if it was real veneer (could have been - it was the town hall) of plastic. Either way it was done to excess and it really put me off.
I did use a small amount in a piece of marquetry once to represent the foaming water at the bottom of a waterfall...

Thanks! Marquetry is not for inexperienced perfectionists. I put way more hours than I should have on this - I'm glad it worked out though. When I finally get some time (and a jointer and a tablesaw that doesn't suck) I'm going to build furniture and try to do some inlays

Thanks

I had no idea what I'd do with it when I bought it at the woodworking store. I just knew it was cheap for figured maple and I had to have it!
