Description
A guide made to help understand how Tobiano works in Celtic Warlanders. Below are simple rules to make designing a little easier:
☘️ Tobiano Originates from the legs and goes up. The marking also often avoids the face leaving simple markings while rarely being a large blaze.
☘️ 3 leg markings are a must for the horse to be classed as tobiano. Stains are optional!
☘️ Some bloodlines can display "cryptic" tobiano which can be as little as 3x coronets and a no face markings.
☘️ Tobiano in both heterozygous and homozygous form has the same maximum range (shown above). Meaning homozygous tobiano can be cryptic!
☘️ "Halo" Tobiano (nTo & ToTo) is a random oddity that happens when the pigment is not correctly spread resulting in regular dark skin and white hair (or vice versa) mixing creating these faint markings.
☘️ "Slipped" Tobiano (nTo only) though most commonly found in shetland ponies can be seen in CW's. It's characterised by not liking the spine, whenever the stain is close to the spine and should naturally connect in the traditional manner it tends to sit around the rump/barrel area and eventually connect to the topline (rare cases don't even touch the topline).
☘️ Cat tracks are a homozygous tobiano trait ONLY. All horses with homozygous tobiano will display these either minimally or extensively.
☘️ Cat tracks can go beyond the body and create holes in the socks resulting in a patchy pattern.
☘️ Cat tracks can cause Belton spots on the legs (holes in the socks).
☘️ Tobiano as a white marking can be boosted by other genes often appearing like the two have merged into one bigger marking. Above is a tobiano + sabino example.
☘️ Tobiano can cause blue eyes and most commonly creates blue splotches (sectoral heterochromia)

Foal accuracy - The pattern does not change/morph or degrade with time. Foals are born with their markings as is!
