Description A shattered winter scape at a fairly low angle to show that morning sky and reflections of a new sun on the shards of heaved ice.

They made for tricky (and noisy) hiking a few mornings ago .. temps were a balmy -15c, which meant I didn't have to bundle up ridiculously nor worry about frostbite just thick pants, long-johns and a parka.. overall a splendid morning!

Wow. Another amazing sight. I really like the near-symmetrical division of the picture plane. It allows for the contrast between the sky full of fluffy clouds and those huge shards of ice. I'm wondering how big those shards actually are... Once again, great job.

thanks Maria .. those are about 3 inches thick hun ...

hey this may be boneheaded ... but what is HB?

Three inches? jeez louise. O_O

HB is a hardness/softness of pencil. I was trying to find my 6B, but I ended up with two HB pencils. It's kind of an inside joke.

Nicely done. It's great that you took an image of ice when it's like that - usually you see it when it's all perfect and shining.

Bozar88 In reply to ??? [2007-02-19 15:18:24 +0000 UTC]

Why this ice is so shattered? Was this shot made on some kind of river? Yesterday I was trying to photograph some ice against the sky, but it came up blurry and dull, so I didn't submit it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wb-skinner In reply to Bozar88 [2007-02-20 05:38:23 +0000 UTC]

its heaved up by Lake Superior .. when the temp gets high (-10) the ice breaks and floats ..then gets pushed up on the shore like that ..then freezes again

Great shot - that is an incredible phenomenon. Do the shards naturally pile up like that then? Never seen anything like it. As usual with your ice shots
