Description

Happy Birthday Wurr!

The first page of this wonderful comic was uploaded 10 years ago today, and I have been eagerly watching for more than half of it. Wow! Bringing one of these amazing characters to life is really the only way I can express just how much I love it. I’ve always wanted to tell @ Paperiapina how awesome I think it is and how inspiring her art and characters are (especially 7 years ago when I found Wurr and wanted to get better at drawing… unfortunately that got derailed a bit when I found sculpture). But being kind of shy and not really having much to contribute, I didn’t say much or comment at all or even really try reach out. However, now that I actually have a DeviantArt and can give back and do something that’s maybe just a tiny fraction of how awesome Wurr is, I thought I should give it try. And what better occasion than these guys turning 10 years old?

It’s such a wonderful story. With an intro like this how could you not want to read the rest? The narrative gives away just enough, but not too much, and I always want to learn more about Wurr’s unique characters and the world they live in. It’s so fascinating! Plus you can bet that nearly everyone pictured, even the teeniest of background characters, has a name and in most cases even a little bit of a backstory. I almost love that as much as the actual comic; the little tidbits you learn about the “wuurld” and the canines inhabiting it by reading the little extras in a side drawing somewhere.

Beyond the story, it’s needless to say that the art is gorgeous. Even though the hounds like Pyramos here are fantastical creatures, their weirdness is all based on real-life dogs and actual mutations, and they are just fascinating to look at. I absolutely love how @ Paperiapina takes biology and genetics into account in how she designs her characters and their families. Even before I knew anatomy I could tell that they looked real enough to step right out of the comic page. Now that I have studied it a bit I am even more impressed. I could be forever entertained with the character designs alone.

I couldn’t decide which of the main characters is my favorite (although I guess if I had to choose one it would be Niavel) so I picked the coolest looking one!  He is quite important to the story, but since he’s not part of the main group I don’t feel guilty making him and no one else. As a bonus this character appeared in Paperiapina’s first comic project (from 2002 or 2003!) and his design was re-tooled for Wurr, so I hope that makes him extra special (yes... I've probably looked through Paperiapina's Wurr gallery three times over). Plus all his craziness allowed me to practice a few new sculpting techniques! This was the first realistic-looking sculpture I have tried making, and even though the fur was pretty tedious I learned a lot! I hope that the end result is close enough to realistic, even though I was very wary of making stray hairs stick up for fear of them breaking off. Additionally, his tail and arm are removable so it can be more easily sent in the mail without fear of breaking. It will be the first thing I ship (and overseas, too, yikes!) so I wanted to take all the precautions I could (you can see a tiny hairline crack in his pointing arm near the shoulder).

Fun fact: The light color along the bottom is actually the color I used for his eyes, and they are so small that I thought that color deserved to be used somewhere else, too.

Well, Paperiapina, I really hope you like it, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes!

Thank you! I am so glad that you like it. You've given us all so much with your dedication in making Wurr and your beautiful stories and art, I just had to give something back. I'll let you know when he is on his way!

Another sculpture! This is a really odd design honestly but i like that a lot. I just love the raised gums with the teeth showing,  and it just makes me super happy to read when people are so passionate and in love with certain things and then put all that love into creating art for it! The fur detail is great and i think i especially like it on the butt and the chest because it's so fluffy there. You also used some painting techniques to give the figure more depth right? It really shows, probably even more in real life than on screen.
Let's hope it survived shipping but with your precautions it should be alright Just pack it tightly in bubblewrap and it will be fine im sure.

Thank you very much for your comments! It's good to know that the fur worked out. I am glad you like it even though you don't know the character (but you should totally go read the Wurr and get to know him!).

I haven't sent it yet (still working out the details) but I hope so too! I will have to pack it as best as I can and cross my fingers, oh boy. And yes I have tried to step up my painting game but I didn't use very many colors on this guy seeing as he's mostly monochrome. For some reason painting makes me more nervous that actually doing the clay... it seems more final? Or something. But the fur texture made it really easy to do a wash of the darker color and dry brush the highlights on, so at least the texture makes it easier! Thanks again!

Does painting take you longer than sculpting? Because for me it's always maybe 80% sculpt time and 20% paint time, so if it's the same for you then maybe the painting just makes you nervous because you haven't spent that much time on it yet. And i totally agree, textures make everything way easier. And fur is a lot of fun!

Oh, absolutely! I am the same way, and spend much more time sculpting than painting. I am sure that has something to do with it, simply that I don't practice painting as much. I think it traumatized me for a little though when I didn't mix up enough base color paint for Spirit... then I had to try to match the color but of course I couldn't get it exactly right so I had to just repaint the whole thing!

Oh noooooo that's the WORST thing! When you run out of paint and pretty much have to repaint everything. That happened to me so often too that now i just always mix up way too much color, especially stuff like skintones where one drop too little of red can ruin everything :') It's impossible to get the right shade again! That's another disadvantage of traditional art but the end result is usually so worth it.

Haha yes I learned pretty quickly after that! I just needed to put my base colors in a larger container and that solved the problem. I feel bad not using some of it but I agree it's much better than having not enough!

Thank you! It will be worth it, I promise. I don't remember how I found it but it's one of the first tings that get me interested in DeviantArt. You'll have to tell me what you think!

Thank you! I super appreciate anyone who stops to write a comment. People like you who browse by 'new' are the real MVPs! So thanks a bunch! Have you heard of Wurr before? If not you should definitely check it out! I always feel bad when I binge-read it in a couple hours then think... wow... that was ten years of work I just flew through!

Yea I've read it! It's really awesome! I kinda joined late to the comic, but it's still cool nonetheless.

No worries! I don't think it really matters when you find it. Actually it's probably nice to wait a little because then you can read it all at once! Do you have a favorite character?
