Doctor Who: Fourth Doctor Scarf
********
I cannot believe that I forgot to post a picture of this!
So, I wanted to be the Fourth Doctor for Halloween, which required this lovely scarf. Four was MY Doctor. Seriously.
I learned to knit JUST to make this. Knitting all day at work from July until the end of August (7+hrs a day)-- then knitting between every class and all evening at school. This project consumed my LIFE.
Very proud of myself. I didn't drop a single stitch or mess up anywhere- Friends and observers had a hard time believing it was the first thing I knit *A*. It isn't wavy at all, it's all uniform and straight like a ruler (the photo makes it look slightly wavy, but I assure you it's just how it's resting on the stand).
I wear this to the DWIN pub and apparently it's very accurate, which makes me so happy because I looked very hard for EXACT yarn. I looked at a lot of scarves and didn't want saturated colours because, quite frankly, Tom Baker's scarf wasn't. It's not 100% perfect, but it'll do for my first attempt.
The scarf is about 11.5 feet long (I'm SHORT and it still drags), although it isn't quite stretched like Tom Baker's (if it was, it'd be the proper length).
EDIT:Yes, it's getting slightly beat up on the edges (the ends of the switched colours are unweaving and poking out). Wearing this on a daily basis when I lived downtown Toronto is the cause, so I wish I would have taken a photo back in October. Oh well. It's supposed to be 'worn-in' from traveling the galaxies. :3
EDIT2: Also should mention that it's the 12th series scarf. Total sucker for the K1 robot, Sarah Jane, and the infamous (and absolutely NOT fake at ALL, that is totally NOT spray-painted bubble-wrap) Ark in Space.

AWESOME! Love the scarf. I could never have the patients to do that. I have crocheted blankets and scarfs, but this would drive me absolutely bonkers.

I have one that like that. My mum Knitted the season 12 one for me, But it is a very heavy wool that is very hot for me because I am very warm blooded. But Recently I did knit a full length Season 18 scarf for my self. It is 22 feet long, which was very much a surprise to me. I thought it would be around 16 or 18. Nope 22, I am going to have fun wearing it this winter . Good job though that is an awesome scarf.
PS: Here is the one my season 12 my Mum Knitted [link]
I have yet to take good pictures of the Season 18 one but I will soon.

I have a similar story. In my HS senior year, there was a project that basically allowed you to do whatever you wanted, as long as you could justify it. I decided mine would be about knitting, so I could make a season 18 scarf. I mangled the beginning foot, and hacked out a couple feet, and let my mother do a couple more feet so I had something to show at school. It amused my classmates, and could be worn by 4 people at a time. After the project was done, it just sat around mostly done, until a few months ago I picked it up again, and found that I could now knit perfectly. The main issue is that I used chenille yarn, about $200 worth, which it is actually meant to be made from. Apparently the guy who runs website never bothered to mention that he'd gauged it for "normal" worsted yarn only, and chenille uses a much larger gauge. So instead of the ends reaching my feet with a single loop to the knees, it has about two and a half loops to the knee, and is more like a robe with no back. It still has a couple loose ends to tie off, and the second set of fringe, but I am trying to convince my mother to fix the former issue (I can do fringe, seriously) by halloween so I can be silly in it. Then I will attempt to make one of these, knowing how to knit and all.

OHHHH. So you're weaving in the ends along the side? This looks excellent! I'm doing this same project for my first knitting experiment, and although I'm not dropping stitiches, it looks a tad wavy. D: Fantastic work!

Ha ha ha you are ridiculously brave knitting that! My friend tried and she got frustrated not even halfway through and frogged the whole thing! Personally I'm afraid to try it at all...I'll drown in so much yarn XD

Do you remember how many stitches you casted on? I really want to make my own, but I don't want to make the width of the scarf too small. I'm super impressed that this is your first project!! I'm still a beginning knitter, so you are now my hero

It's been over a year since I completed the scarf, but I think it was 65 stitches cast on.
Thanks for your kind words; Best of luck on your scarf!

I actually got materials for knitting and crocheting for Christmas, and the first thought that popped into my head was 'ooh, I can make a Tom Baker scarf!'
As a total beginner, I still have yet to master the chain stitch, so it will be quite some time until I am ready to start it at all. With crafty things, my brain doesn't kick in for awhile, which makes things difficult.
By the way, your scarf looks fantastic! Give yourself a pat on the back for finishing it.

I love taking it from you and keeping it for weeks at a time <3
When are you knitting a new one so I can take this one?

Out of curiosity, did you ref the color changes, or did you just do ones that looked "about right"? I've been thinking of making a 4 scarf myself, and have been twitching at the amount of serials I'd have to go through to get all the right color changes...
Ahh, Ark in Space. Nope, not bubblewrap AT ALL. Although, IIRC, that's the one with the pretty cool insect thing. Isn't it? And then we get the one with the random Sontaran?
It wasn't until I sat down and watched all of the Classic Who that I really understood why my friends kept calling my No Really It's Winter scarf (2ft crossways, 10 feet lengthways) my Doctor Who scarf. I was sadly uneducated. But it's not the right colors, alas, and it's in k1p1 rib instead of garter stitch...

For the colours, I mainly looked at the photos at [link] (he has some very good ones) and just went buy the first couple serials in series 12.
I searched a lot of stops with pages of printed-off photos and picked the closest I could find (in the proper size yarn). It's not 100% accurate, but I'm happy with it.
Best of luck though, it's a tricky scarf to make (and dreadfully time consuming).

Well, I've been knitting for a while---I knit lace for fun, so I suspect another scarf won't be that bad. It's just finding the right colors---and I can probably get those off the internet.
That's a great site! I've bookmarked it, and now I too can have a good Doctor scarf. One of my goals in life is to have a little something fangirly from all of the Doctors.

The only real difficulty is the constant switching of colours. It gets rather monotonous after a while, but it's surely not as hard ans knitting lace.
Oh you most definitely can find super-exact colours of yarn on the internet. I believe that website even has links to where you can purchase it.
That's a lovely goal- I wonder what you could have from One or Nine?

kalany In reply to weird-science [2009-03-23 20:45:46 +0000 UTC]
Well, the sonic can count for Nine, as I keep thinking about getting Ten's nerdglasses (who looks at a screwdriver and thinks "ooh, this could be a little more SONIC?").
A lot of the classic Doctors have that problem, though, that what's memorable about them is their lack of dress sense. One has that silly hat, though. I could get the hat. Two... uh... maybe the silly pants? Three I think I may get a model of Bessie, which isn't quite as cool, but I don't know where to get velvet jackets for anything approaching afforable. Five, obviously, is celery (or, again, that hat...), and Six is just too irritating to fangirl (although God knows he has enough terrible dress sense that it should be easily to find something...). Seven, probably the umbrella or silly sweatervest. And I have yet to figure out how to get my sticky little fingers on a DVD of Eight.
I also keep thinking about getting a pink coat and knitting a very long white scarf and cosplaying RomanaII. I love how she imitates the Doctor... in her own way. I think she's one of my favorite classic companions (next to Barbara and Ian, who were both my first companions and totally awesome).
