Description
This is a tutorial I have written for patreon, and as a sample of what to expect, and whats to come, I've gone ahead and made the first one free. This is definitely the ground floor when it comes to what I have to share. In writing these tonight, finding ways to explain what I know, given most of it was self taught and not told to me, it made me realize I have so very many of these to write. I will be covering color with even more depth, after this one, in the next.
The site they will all be uploaded to is www.patreon.com/neiruffino and for my $10 a month and up patrons. They get these as well as many other things as we go along.
There have already been tutorial uploads about creating custom brushes to use best as a colorist, and the brush settings that can save you time. After that I wrote one about how to paint metal, and after that I wrote one about color choice, then this one.
Next months tutorials will be in depth color choice and how light works on different surfaces, as well as how to add atmosphere and mood. When you sign up, you get access to every post that has already been made with the tutorials, high res lines to color, and layered files to learn from.

Ahh now I get it why the skin of my favorite character seems to be like super duper purple in the color picker while in the original artwork it seems to be white ther darker hair fools my eyes lol. Thank you sm!

would it have been better to say "how our eyes have been fooled"? because thats the idea i was intending. take this and whine about it all you want, nobody listens to a whiner who was wrong in the first place.

wow you need a chill pill. color theory fools our eyes into thinking we are seeing one color when its only because of the surrounding colors. that is all was ever intended.

Great tutorial! Back when I used watercolor a lot I was able to make paintings that looked like they had tons of colors when really I only used 3 or 4 different colors. Mixing them carefully enough, I was able to make green look like yellow when placed next to a darker green mixed with a pinch of red, but there was no yellow paint on the canvas at all. It really helped create unity.

How incredibly interesting. Even having taken a color theory class for a graphic design degree, I never learned this. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks very much, Nei - it's obvious you have a wealth of information!
I was wondering for that colour wheel with the primary, secondary, tertiary - are there official or common names for the colours around the edges?

WhiteHowler7 In reply to dazza1008 [2015-07-21 02:50:14 +0000 UTC]
the ones around the edges are complimentary colors.

Thanks, but I meant names like "fuschia", "tangerine", "lime"... common names for them. So it's easy to refer to them when discussing steps.

im sure oil painters have that kind of grasp on it, but I guess I have my own names for them.

This is great stuff! I found especially useful how you mentioned that:
- beginning colorists THINK in primary colors
- you don't have to add a primary color to get the feel of it, you just have to get closer to it.
I think in primaries and secondaries ... but now I'm going to try to start thinking in tertiaries, too!

wow, this is great, I mean I did kind of spot this when I sucked colours from pictures, but I never took it seriously. My chromatic teacher taught nothing about this, and went on about light theories.....I feel kind of sad about that, but thankfully I saw this

I think I became desensitized to some of this in my last Design class. Β The focus was on color interpretation and the fundamental aspects of applying color in works of art. Β Almost every thing you cover in here was what I learned in class, and thus I was able to see through some of the examples(the purple rectangles).
Ever considered becoming a teacher

I know, and I would really like to hop on to your Patreon! Β BUT, I already support 3 other artists on their and that's my self-imposed limit(and what I can afford).
Omar-Dogan hooked me a year ago with his 5th Capsule story and I love the detail and passion he has put into it with his youthful characters and interesting world building on an alien planet with humans as the story develops. Β sidneymt has a comic called Slimy Thief which is an interesting little indie fantasy comic unlike any concept I've ever seen before and is a good source of laughter. Β Finally Precia-T is just amazing with her Targa world that she has been slowly fleshing out and constant tutorials she is posting every month. Β Plus her commission work and use of colors in extravagant detail
is just beautiful,Β TARGA Felicia brushing hair (commission) Β being a perfect example.
If anything changes with any of those three though, you are at the top of my list to support next through there

FOOLS. Β Colors are disney villains. Β And your eyes are the hapless disney protagonists. Β Thanks for this! Β I know there are several tutorials out there already that explain this colorful trickery, but it always helps to have a fresh pair of.... eyes... take a look at the matter. Β Wait.
Thanks for this!

yeah i know there is a lot out there on this, but a lot of people that follow me trying to learn dont even know what color theory is. i thought it best to start at the beginning

yea our cones only detect red green and blue all the colors we see are our interpretations of those levels and pink doesn't really exist

Very cool.
But it's funny, due to my colorblindness, the violet spot on the left of the diagram pretty much disappears into the background.
