Description UPDATE:  Added a few more greebles and decals and such.  We frequently see chopped-up Starfleet ships; the most basic ones consist of a saucer section with a few nacelles strapped to the top or bottom.  I wanted to make a ship that used the engineering section instead.  My initial design looked like a submarine with extra hulls, so it got a top deck and a keel to give it some interest.  When I saw the keel, I realized that I had just made another ship in my "Ranger" line, hence the name.  This mesh was stupidly difficult to build; a lot of it I did by hand.  I'm especially proud of the bits above the impulse engines.  It took me forever to get that right.  The phasers aren't exactly Starfleet standard issue.  I never liked phaser strips or those stupid little balls.  Think of them as an upgraded version of the cannons of the NX-01.

BACKSTORY:  The Ranger is warp test ship.  The large keel and aft spine are full of warp field stabilizers and subspace sensor arrays and the hull is uniquely re-enforced to withstand extreme forces that may be induced by sudden warp field destabilizations.  The ship is designed to be flown at warp speeds through unusual spacial conditions.  It tests warp flight near black holes, through nebulae, in areas of "weakened" subspace, and near other singularities where the use of warp has unknown effects.  It often operates alone because the remainder of the science attachment waits outside of the danger zone for the Ranger to report conditions inside.  The Ranger can be outfitted with meager scientific facilities for missions in areas that have proven too dangerous for standard warp travel.  This way, Starfleet can get some research accomplished before the rest of the science attachment arrives, possibly years later.

Well, that was THE BEST THING I HAVE SEEN ALL YEAR!

Crap, mate, this is awesome!

I also note the small cameo of Tom D.'s Long Range Tactical Strike Shuttle.  Nice touch there.  I like his work.

The lighting and texturing job you did on my ship is astonishing!  I love the way the guts of the bussard collectors both glow and reflect everything.  The flood lights on the ship name and hull number are perfect!  And my, um, also most favorite part is what you did with the deflector dish.  That reflectivity is exactly what I had envisioned.

The space shuttle is a bit of a non-sequitur, but maybe it's a museum piece.

I would love to discuss with you your thoughts on the ship, the model, individual details, and anything else!

This is so cool!

Thanx Russ
heres the deleted "Atmospheric scene" : imgur.com/a/gfKDC

As you can tell , iv still got a long way to go to get to Broadcast-standard,
even though the new movies are rendered in HD4K, im still aiming for photo-realistic,which aint easy.
and of course i have NO Storyboard or script to guide me.

Tom D' got a tiny Movie-Intro, all to himself a while ago, he he : vimeo.com/170056947
--------------------------

the nasa shuttle was put in your scene to "supply-&-Drop" the ranger with extra coffee and doughnuts , haha....but maby its not relevant to the scene.
maby im wrong but i thought N.A.S.A built the enterprise ? :  anyway, i did 2 videos on that ship alone:
a post from one of the designers that gave me the idea to "motion-graphic" that craft, as yet i dont think anyone has.

Regarding your u.s.s. ranger, it was a pleasure to assign the textures , because you have separated them accordingly, where as some designers group certain elements together
which is  a nightmare, to correct, but you created the correct  procedure, so well done.
your one of the only designers iv seen to have "High-Detailed" The ranger, no one else as done it, to such a high standard.

Ah!  I understand your confusion regarding the various Enterprises and other ships.  Maybe this timeline will help:

  • 1974 - 1979   Enterprise Space Shuttle [Built by NASA]
  • 1985 - 2011   Atlantis Space Shuttle [Built By NASA] (in the movie with the USS Ranger)
  • Near Future (2075-ish)  ISX Enterprise [Built By NASA] (in your NASA 1 and NASA 2 videos)
  • 2125 - 2140   Enterprise XCV-330 [Built By the United Earth Space Probe Agency] 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
  • 2151 - 2161   Enterprise NX-01 [Built by the United Earth Starfleet] 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
  • 2245 - 2270   Enterprise NCC-1701  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
        My USS Mariner fits here
  • 2270 - 2293   Enterprise NCC-1701-A  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
My USS Ranger and USS Gamgee fit about here
  • 2293 - 2329   Enterprise NCC-1701-B  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
My USS Shadowfax fits here, sort of.
  • 2332 - 2344  Enterprise NCC-1701-C  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
  • 2363 - 2371  Enterprise NCC-1701-D  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  This one comes in two parts  3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model… ;
        3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model…
  • 2372 - 2386  Enterprise NCC-1701-E  [Built By the United Federation of Planets]  this is a hard ship to draw, so there isn't a particuarly good one on the Warehouse.  There is a good model on www.trekmeshes.ch/
       Tom D.'s shuttle goes here.

If you're curious regarding what ships go together stylistically or with regards to a timeline, let me know!  I am definitely happy to help you in your journey to broadcast standard.

Thanks! That was annoyingly difficult to do with my skill level at the time, so i'm glad you appreciate it!

But, it is sort of essential for Star Trek ships. They tend to have that smooth look to them.

You have the talent now.  I am unsure who the artist was that did the cover art for the book, Starship Titanic.  I read it a long time a go.  I realize another person wrote the novel adaptation based on the game and Douglas Adams' work.  I have the entire radio series of 'The Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy' and the full cast audio drama on MP3 CDs.  I loved the TV miniseries from 1981 but I really didn't care for the 2005 Disney version.

Oscar Chichoni drew the ship

The origional painting he made of the thing doesn't seem to be available anywhere, but most of it is.

All of the artwork I can find for it is here:

Finally a variation from the two pencils and a saucer look. I think it also could be used as a secondary combat ship because of its heavy re-enforcement.

WideFoot In reply to RepublicofDesire [2016-06-15 11:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Still has the pencils, but thanks!

You're probably right about the combat ship thing. And, you might have some interesting tactical options available to you by coming at enemies from unexpected directions (through the impassible nebula they were using as cover).

But, I don't generally enjoy making warships. Most star trek games, ship stat. lists, and fan-made ships focus on armament and speed. But, i'm almost always interested in any of the other capabilities of the ship.

You had to ask this question on my most complicated model.  Usually, I just use a bunch of fancy follow-me-ing.  In this case, I had downloaded some new free ruby plugins and I wanted to experiment a bit.

The main hull comes in three parts.  If you download the sketchup model and look at the hidden lines, my explanation will make more sense.  You can also look at this image I uploaded to my scraps.   widefoot.deviantart.com/art/Me…

First, I created the main central portion of the hull (the bit capped at the front end with the deflector dish) with a simple "follow me" of some arc around a circle.

Next, I created a flat "top" that would become the top deck with the rear spire.  That deck happens to have the same outline as a projection of one of the arcs in the central portion, but the main thing is that the arc has the same number of line segments as in the "follow me" arc.  I added a smaller arc connecting the ends of each line segment of the arc in the top deck to a line junction point in the central "follow me" shape (the junction points happened to be directly below the top-deck line segment ends because I had used that projection method).  Each of these arcs had the same number of line segments and pushed the same distance parallel to the top deck plate along an axis (green in my case).  This created a sort of wire mesh of the shape that would become the inwardly curved area.  Highlight the wire mesh and use the Curviloft Ruby Plugin (spline curves) to generate a pretty mesh.  If you were smart about your line segment count, it will be neat and easy.

The keel is also made with the Curviloft plugin, but it was just a shape I found pleasing.  I did have to be mindful about how it was going to match up with the center portion.  Part of the curve started out as a section cut of the center portion of the hull.  You'll note that a little ways down from the top of the keel, my poly count reduces by half.  I used Curviloft (spline curves) twice, using arcs with different numbers of line segments for the upper and lower portions.  I had to be mindful of my line segment count so that the two would match up nicely.

The spire at the back end and the "bow" above the deflector dish were more difficult.  There was a lot of trial and error with attempts at creating neat meshes, but nothing really panned out.  Some Curviloft (skinning) was used.  Some "follow me" was done with various curve segments, followed by "Intersect with model" to make the sides match up.  Some was just drawn by hand in a way that looked nice and then "soften curved."

Thanks!  The overall shape of this ship is probably my most common ship design scheme.  And, I try to make every greeble and protrusion have a purpose.  I don't always succeed, but for the most part, everything is a specific sensor, hatch, or other component.

The back story was a coin flip, but I realized that if I ever made a master systems display, I'd have nothing to fill the huge keel with.  I guess that in this case, function follows form.

Dox482 In reply to WideFoot [2014-05-29 06:03:36 +0000 UTC]

I do a few ship designs as well, and I find that sometime you have to start off with a backstory in order to get the idea to work. Of course for the flip side, sometime you just have to throw a few random ideas together in order to make an awesome ship. It a vice a versa thing.
