Gatsby  | Tracker

So I used 0 refs for the second panel and they were completely free-hand drawn so that's probably why it looks so disproportionate xD
I also forgot Hacon's cuts so let's just pretend they are there x3

Finally getting on with Gatsby's story! Still have a few more mares to introduce and develop the story a littleeee more before I introduce his foalies! ;w;

Gatsby still sat, huffing and scowling at the young stallion before him. What sort of stallion charges at an older stallion?! Gatsby was still livid. Brooke grazed a little ways beside Gatsby, letting out a soft chuckle. Gatsby pinned his ears and snorted, "What?" he growled but Brooke only chuckled once more. "Brooke what's so funny?!" His voice was slightly raised this time, his temper getting the best of him. "You." Brooke giggled, "You're grinding your teeth."
Gatsby suddenly became aware of the vice. "So?" He spat, quieter this time, like a little colt. Brookite calmly walked to him and nudged him on the shoulder. "Get up, go for a walk. Calm yourself down before you rest for the night. Otherwise you'll never sleep." Gatsby sighed, but his mare was correct. He shakily got to his feet. He glanced over to see all of his herd. Tess was still treating Hacon's wounds, Jade not too far away, head still low. Azula seemed to be enjoying winding up Silver with Arrie and Izusa was foraging in the grass. So long as everyone was okay, that was his main concern.

Gatsby trekked a little further into the forest, not too far though, just enough that his herd were still in sight. He let out a large sigh and tried to enjoy the sounds of the late evening. The birds chirping their last songs, the rustling of the leaves in the breeze and the sounds of ... hoofbeats? He jolted his around, half expecting another stallion to be standing there, but it wasn't. "Jadeane?" The mare flinched a little at her name, "What are you doing here?" The mare didn't answer his question and only lowered her ears. She opened her mouth a little as if she was going to speak but no words came out. Gatsby's ears pinned a little before they eased, he still wasn't in the best of moods with her. He turned back around and kept walking. The chestnut mare behind him followed a little paces behind. Gatsby decided to break the silence, "Why are you following me?" He heard the mare behind him sigh, more of a solemn sigh as opposed to her usual sarcastic, fed up ones. "I- Well... I just wanted to come and apologise..." She spoke quietly to the stallion in front of her. Gatsby twitched his ear round to listen a little better to her, not fully believing her sincerity. "Apologise for what?" Gatsby grumbled, "You haven't actually told me what exactly you did." He glanced around a little as he spoke, catching only a glimpse of her sullen expression. Jadeane didn't speak. Gatsby stopped now and sighed, he turned to face the mare. "Jadeane, what happened back there?" He managed to calm himself enough that his tone was no longer threatening, but he couldn't mask the disappointment and hurt. Jade avoided his eyes and kicked some dirt with her hoof. "Well, see... It's just," Jade stumbled about with her words, not seeming to find the right ones, something quite unusual  for her. She let out a submissive sigh, "I just can never seem to do the right thing. For Tess and I ... Every place I lead her never works out, the stallions I choose to follow never work out. And then Hacon seemed so good and I thought I finally picked something good for us and we got separated from him," She avoided his eye contact as she spoke. "Then you wander in and she finds you perfect and then decides we should follow you and the first time she gets it right! It's just so frustrating!" Gatsby chose to ignore the 'woe is me' parts of that sentence and he smiled a little at the slight and only complement she has ever given him. Jade shuffled uncomfortably before continuing, "Hacon showed up a few days ago. He caught onto our scent and thought we'd been taken. When I explained what happened he offered to leave and let us stay but I kind of.. well, I lied. I said that you were holding us against out will and that he should wait for the right moment to take us back and then, well, the right moment came..." Gatsby frowned at the betrayal of the mare but she continued her explanation. "When I saw that Arrie nearly got hurt and how badly Hacon got hurt, well. I knew I was wrong, I know I'm wrong... I shouldn't have created the situation." She looked him in the eyes for the first time. "I'm sorry Gatsby, I really am. Hacon isn't a bad stallion, it was all me... I understand if you want me to leave and I-" "Jade." Gatsby interrupted. Jade flinched, slightly surprised that he didn't call her Jadeane for once. "I don't want you to leave." Jade could only stand in shook as Gatsby spoke. "You aren't a bad mare, I understand you were acting on emotions. I forgive you." He could see tears well in the mares eyes and he nuzzled her a little. "Please stay." Jade cracked out in a smile. "I will. Thank you Gatsby! I really am so sorry. It won't happen, ever again, and that I can promise." She nuzzled him back now and Gatsby chuckled, "I believe you."

.~~~.

Brooke wandered over to Hacon after watching Jade sneak away after Gatsby. Tess was talking to him in a soft yet stern voice. "It was silly Hacon! Why did you ever think that you could take a stallion, bigger, older and stronger than you?" The young stallion on the ground huffed a little, "I dunno..." Brookite pitied the young little stallion, he was so skinny and weak. She rubbed a little more herbs on his wounds. Hacon winced as she did so before his expression returned to the defeated one he wore a lot. Tessia sighed, "What are we gonna do Brooke? There's no way he'll be able to leave for a few days at least! Gatsby-" "Will be fine." Brooke interrupted the worried mare. "He'll let him stay to rest, leave him to me." Tessia didn't look convinced but she nodded. Brooke smiled down at the stallion at her feet, "You have a heard Hacon?" He glanced at her with sad eyes, "Not anymore," he managed to whisper. Brooke's heart sank. She didn't know what to do. Would Gatsby accept the stallion into their herd? He could always use the extra help. She wasn't entirely sure yet, but she would work something out. Hacon shifted at her feet, attempting to get up of the cold ground. "What are you doing?" She asked. "I'm .. I'm just gonna leave. I don't want to burden you all..." The stallion struggled a lot with his hind before Brooke stepped in again. "Stop," She commanded as softly as she could. "You aren't burdening us. We want to help. Just you rest."

Brooke could hear voices come form behind her. She turned to see Gatsby and Jadeane returning from their walk. They both looked a lot more relaxed, Jadeane was even laughing. Brooke raised a brow but she smiled, happy that the two were finally getting along. Tess was still with Hacon so Brooke decided to take the opportunity to talk to Gatsby. She trotted over to where both he and Jade were emerging from. "Gatsby!" She called happily, "Can I talk to you a moment please?" Gatsby turn to look at her and smiled, "Of course, my lady. I'll speak with you later Jade." He gaze Jade a farewell nuzzle, "Okay, I'll settle the others in for the night." Jaeane trotted off to the other mares, leaving Brooke and Gatsby to speak.
"Whats up Brooke?" Brooke wondered how to begin but she seemed to find the words easily, "Well, I was just talking with Tessia about Hacon and well he-" "He's gonna stay here in the herd for a while, at least until he heals." Brooke stood stunned at the stallion's words. Gatsby laughed at her expression, "What? Were you not expecting that?" Brooke shook her head, "I mean, no, not that easy at least!" Gatsby chuckled again, "Jade explained a few things to me on our walk, he was good to them, and I respect that, so he can stay if he wishes." Brooke nuzzled Gatsby, she was happy that he was so understanding. "Good. That's good of you Gatsby." Gatsby smiled to his first mare, "Will you take care of him? Make him feel welcome? I think you are the best mare for the job you know." Brooke let out a chuckle, "Of course, I wouldn't let you down." Gatsby nuzzled his mare once again. "I know you won't."
