Haven't finished crying over this piece yet.

Been feeling a little disconnected from Gatsby's herd and needed a bit of a change. So glad to be back ;v;

Months had passed. Many months. So many that Gatsby had lost track, and he only wished that it was for the right reasons.

The valley had not been kind to the varnish's herd, not at all. It was one thing after another for them and none of it has been good. Gatsby looked over his weather beaten herd, they were weary, restless. In need of a long break, some more than others. Gatsby's heart felt heavy. He felt like he had failed them, but he could only hope that he hadn't. But thinking back - it was the only thing he could possibly think.

It was the summer of last year that had hit them the hardest. The sunshine brought happiness and relaxation - for a time. But after that first summer month, the brightest time of the year became the darkest. As the sun made the valley hotter, the shrubs and grasses got drier, and the fires that came with that got more and more brutal. He was careful, Gatsby remember this the most, he was so so careful. He knew of the wildfires that had raged the valley in summer, he did his best to stay near the waters, keep away from the driest of places. But it hadn't been enough ...
The valley was set alight in the evening. He remembered seeing the smoke first. It was the biggest and blackest cloud of smoke he had seen. Gatsby knew right away he had to go, get moving away as quick as possible. His herd were grazing, scattered over the hills they had chose to settle on for the day. The panic set in as he saw how distant they all were. But he couldn't wait, he had to move.

Instantly he took off, full gallop. Snaking and gathering all the outliers. Triton had taken to the front, leading the herd away in the right direction. Most of the herd were following quickly behind, heading for the river down land. Gatsby counted, most were there but not all. He looked back, some of the mares were still trying to gather the new foals of the season. Gatsby's heart had sped up as the fires moved quickly towards them. He ran backwards, collecting his stragglers. Once he reached the foals they each began to take off, taking serious now that their dad had arrived. Barclay and Cosette sped past the rest, catching up quickly with the herd. Their mothers followed them. Jensen and Cassio weren't far behind them. Gatsby looked around now, it still wasn't everyone. Where had they went? Gatsby spun in circles, desperately trying to spot his remaining mares and foals in mixture of trees and smoke. Suddenly the two foals he was looking for appeared. Wylie and Dipper shot out from the trees, making Gatsby call to them to run to the herd over the hill. He ran with them and watched as Galinda and Biscotti waited for them to catch up. Gatsby looked to his herd and then back to the fires that raged. Two mares. Two mares were still missing.

"Gatsby! Let's go!" Galinda called to him from below.

Gatsby looked back to the fires again before glancing to his herd. "Gatsby!" Galinda yelled again, "The fires are too big now, we need to go!" Gatsby gulped and ran to her. "Galinda they're not here! I need to go get them!" Gatsby responded double checking the herd, but they still weren't there. "Gatsby, we need to get moving. Now. They'll need to get to safety themselves." Galinda ordered. And she wasn't wrong. The whole herd was nearly surrounded. Gatsby sighed and ran forwards, stopping at Dipper, "Where are they? Azula and Jade? Did you see where they went?" He asked the foal frantically. Dipper shook his head. "N-no, they came and got us and as we ran out we heard snapping... I think the branches fell and cut them off. They said they would find another way out... I-I-" "Okay, it's OK." Gatsby said, noticing the colt getting more and more upset. "Get going dip, quickly." Dipper nodded and sped off once again. Gatsby gulped. Galinda nudged him to get going, "Let's go Gatsby." At this point, he couldn't do much more and galloped off with the rest of his herd.

That night was long. The longest night Gatsby had ever experienced. The herd had just managed to find a wide space by the river. A few other horses and animals took shelter there too. Triton spent most of the night spotting a large Grullo Appaloosa who had been eying some of the herd mares. But thankfully, he didn't try anything, most likely because Triton was much bigger than he was. Gatsby spent the entire night worrying. His two mares had not returned. He paced most of the night until morning, when thankfully, most of the flames had went out. The other animals and horses began moving from the spot, but Gatsby and his herd stayed, in hopes that their two lost mares would return. As soon as the sun rose over the hills, Gatsby wanted to set off looking for them but Galinda stopped him. He was too emotional and he needed to stay with his herd just in case. Begrudgingly, Gastby agreed.
Galinda and Silver went looking instead. Gatsby watched them go and didn't take his eyes off where they had went for a second. Brookite tried to comfort him, but to no avail. Gatsby couldn't calm himself, his stomach was in knots, he simply could not shake the bad feeling that he had.

An hour or two later, Galinda and Silver returned. Silver looked shaken, like she had seen a ghost. She wandered past Gatsby, giving him a weak nuzzle on her way past. As she reached the heard, she burst into tears, falling to the floor. Mares rushed to comfort her and Gatsby watched on in horror. He looked back to Galinda and the spotted mare just looked down and shook her head. For second, Gatsby was sure his heart had stopped, that the world stopped spinning and nothing existed anymore. He gulped, "Take me to them ... please." He whimpered. Galinda could only nod.

It was quite a walk, a good distance away from the herd. The had to manoeuvre around many fallen trees. And the small clearing they were in was almost completely hidden. It was difficult to get too without the fire, so they would have stood no chance in the flames. Galinda stood at the edge of the clearing as Gatsby made his way in. They were both lying together, looking as peaceful as angels. Gatsby fell to the ground before them both, whimpering slightly before the tears stung his eyes. 'It was the smoke,' Galinda had said. They inhaled too much smoke. And if they hadn't of risked everything, it could have been two foals here in their place instead of them. The tears fell from his eyes now, as Gatsby pondered everything he could have done differently. As he thought of every moment he spent with these two mares and how they helped him so much
in his life as a lead stallion. They were both some of Gatsby's first mares. Mares that had meant the world to him. Mares who were mothers to his foals, and mares that would no longer be with him, in his life or in his herd.

Gatsby ached. His heart have never felt such pain before. He sat and wept by their hooves for as long as he needed. He had lost any track of time he had before he saw them, that when he opened his eyes again and looked around him, he noticed his herd had joined him in mourning. Some lying down by the clearing or standing in a circle around them. But each and everyone had their head down in respect, in mourning and in love for the two lives they had lost. Even the foals.

"We met a robin here this morning." Galinda said after a while, referring to her and Silver, "She told us that they accepted what was coming. She had met them the night before, trying to show them a way out, but the fire got too intense that Jadeane told her to go on." She gulped, trying not to choke up, trying to stay strong as lead mare. "They asked her to find their herd. And to tell them that... that they were okay and that they love us. Jade said that being in your herd, Gatsby, had turned her whole life around and she will be forever grateful for all that you've done." Gatsby took a deep breath , as the tears fell harder now. "Azula said that she loved you very much, and she hopes she will not be forgotten-" Galinda choked up now, having to stop now as Doveva comforted her.

"She hopes she will not be forgotten, but she knows your herd will thrive if you stay as strong as you have." A voice from above spoke. The herd looked up, spotting a small robin in the charred branches above. "And to Silver, her best friend, she owes you her sanity and grace. You were her rock in the hardest of times." Silver smiled through her tears. "They both, wanted you all to know how happy they were to spend their lives in this herd and how you all have a place in their hearts and will continue to into the afterworld. They were in peace in their last moments and will now be in a forever peace." The robin finished and flew to the ground, "I am so sorry, for your loss." The small bird bowed it's head to Gatsby and the herd and turned and did the same to Jade and Azula. "May they be at rest in a better place then here." The robin said softly, Gatsby nodded as did the herd before watching as the Robin flew off. The rest of the day was spent in mourning.

Before the sun began to set, Gatsby decided it was time to leave as he heard the noises of humans and their human devices. He took his herd North, looking back over the charred valley he was leaving behind. The humans were out now, probably evaluating the damage. He had heard that they sometimes took the horses that had passed on, put them in a better place. He watched as they headed towards the clearing they came from, hoping that they would find his mares, give them a better resting place so that they weren't bothered in the afterlife. He severly hoped.

The summer had been the worst. Hand down. And Gatsby hadn't quit recovered if at all before the next trails came. The end of summer brought more predators. Vicious and risk taking ones. Predators more willing to take their chances. Which is what happened when the mountain lion attacked. It came out of nowhere. The herd splintered into small groups as the lion sped after them. Gatsby's flight instincts kicked in as he ran off, calling for the splintered groups to follow. But then, his flight instincts wavered, an anger that was buried deep within surfaced in the stallions features as the lion leapt for a foal. A foal. It had almost got a good hold on Mabel's leg just as Gatsby had crashed into it. He wasn't losing another herd member, not if he could help it. He lashed at the lion as Mabel got free, limping over to her mother who quickly ran to her foal. Gatsby lashed out again, and again, and again. The mountain lion panicked as the large stallion attacked, nicking the lion on the shoulder causing it in roar in pain. The lion ran the opposite direction now. Gatsby chased after, speeding as quick as he could until the lion ran straight back into the mountains. Gatsby huffed, snorting as he began to catch his breath now. He made sure the lion was gone and not coming back before he turned around and headed for the herd again.

Once back everyone seemed fine. The foals all cheered for their father, impressed by his attack on the lion. Gatsby went to Mabel, making sure she was fine. The chirpy filly was fine, even considering her injuries, she was hyper with excitement at the action. Galinda called Gatsby over now. "Gatsby, we've had a bit of a mishap." She stated, "When the herd splintered and you ran off no one knew what to do. There were horses going in all directions! Triton and I managed to gather most but ... some have gotten separated. I can't find them and they haven't came back. They must've just kept running..." Gatsby frowned and sighed, "Who?" "Nagisa and Tuesday. Wylie is still here she ran with the other foals but... no sign of her mother." Gatsby looked back to the mountains, then to his herd. "Do we have time to wait?" Galinda gulped, "Predator attacks are on the rise, especially out in the open like this... and if you or another goes off searching by yourself it'll be even more dangerous." Gatsby sighed, "Then we move on. We need to protect everyone." Galinda nodded, she understood.

With separations and fires, the loss of that many members had taken a toll on the herd. It had gotten difficult to stay cheerful, and the coming of winter didn't help. Lyra fell ill, slowing the herd down in the toughest of conditions. The herd was able to take shelter in a covered clearing thankfully and Lyra got the rest and herbs she needed to recover. But the was when Spark Fire fell sick. Very, very sick. The herd had to stay in the clearing for even longer and food was getting scarce. They had to move on before Spark Fire was fully recovered, even now she still wasn't 100%. The herd stopped for her when they could, but in winter, it was hard. Winslet had been developing a limp in the deepest snow, she trailed at the back most of the time that even her youngest foal, Earnest was much faster than her. Gatsby fearer for her fate, but still, he had to keep going.

Now, in the harsh wind of the end of spring, Gatsby continued to lead his herd. Forwards. Ever forwards. The only way he could go. He could no longer keep looking to the past, thinking of what he could have done differently, how he could have changed it. There was no time for that anymore. He had to continue to keep the herd that he had now. The spring hadn't been as rough for his herd. Spark Fire was still getting better and thankfully the spring weather was helping. Winslet hadn't improved much, but she managed. Gatsby stood in a green meadow, watching his herd graze. They were, happy, now. He hoped that would stay. It had been almost a year. A full year of turmoil, but he and has herd had gotten through it, just about. Galinda joined him, watching the herd by his side. they stood in a comfortable silence for a few moments.

"Do you think, I've changed?" Gatsby asked, after a little while.

"How do you mean?" Galinda replied. Gatsby shrugged, "Do you... think I'm different than who I was, this time last year?"

Galinda thought for a moment and nodded, "Yes, I do, as it were." They both stood in silence for another moment longer. "Do you think I should have stayed the same?" Gatsby asked. "No." Galinda replied. "No one can stay the same, not ever. It's not something that is possible I am afraid. But the change wouldn't happen if we didn't need it, my mother always told me that."

"Do you think I needed the changes we got?"
Gatsby asked. Galinda shook her head, "I don't think it's up to us dear. It's the time that changes us, dear, the time."
