Kiara wasn't meant to be the queen of Priderock, at least not at first; though she was the second born of the litter, she was not first in line like her older brother Kopa. This, however, didn't bother her too much, as it meant she could spend most of the day playing with her friends and going on adventures. Much like her brothers, she loved adventure, but she also liked getting her way, and was a bit of a spoiled princess. Simba was putty in her paws, and while admittedly Kiara was a daddy's girl, it also meant she could usually get her way. Life seemed pretty carefree, with her biggest concern being her betrothal to Prince Afua of the Mountain Pride; at the time she didn't like the idea of dopey boys and marriage, and much preferred to spend time with Boga and Zuri instead of her intended.
Things, however, took a sharp turn when her brother, Kopa, died. The pride was in distress, none more so than the royal family. Kiara missed her brother deeply, and when it was announced she would take his place as queen, she could hardly handle it. She'd never wanted to be queen, since it sounded like so much work, and she worried she'd lose her friends just like Kopa had. She began to rebel, sneaking off without her father's approval, and one fateful day, she met Kovu. She immediately took to Kovu upon their first meeting, but it would also be their last for a while when Simba and Zira discovered the two had met. Now, Kiara was forbidden from seeing Kovu, and try as she might, she didn't end up seeing Kovu until much later.
As they all began to age and their teen years snatched them up, things began to take even more of a turn. Boga was now far more interested in Kiara's brother Kion than she was the rest of the group, often ditching or ignoring them to spend time with him, and though Kiara tried to reach out, Boga rebuffed her. Zuri, once confident and boastful, now became much more subdued after her sister ran away, and Kiara felt as though her control were slipping. Anxious, she asked her mother for guidance, and Nala helped guide Kiara through her feelings. After all of this, Kiara now had a much different look on life, and her mother's words only encouraged her to toughen up and become a strong, steady friend for Zuri to rely on. She was never able to reach Boga and talk sense into her, but this process of acting maturely made Kiara a bit more confident in her role as queen. She wasn't completely matured, not yet anyways, but she was finally looking forward to her future as queen. She began to get the hang of her royal lessons, though hunting lessons were a bit more difficult to master, and she took the time to work on her negotiation skills, especially after the Lion Guard broke up and the Pridelands needed someone to guide them through minor disputes.
When Kiara became a young adult, and was beginning to take on even more responsibilities, Kovu once more came back into her life. He'd now grown, much like she had, and for Kiara, it was love at first sight. Kovu took a bit of time to warm up to her, but Kiara was willing to wait. She found that though things had changed since their first chance encounter, helping Kovu adapt to the Pridelands Pride, and Kiara, despite being more mature, still was a bit naive, and trusted Kovu and his words. When Kovu supposedly betrayed Simba, she could believe it, and heartbroken, Kiara escaped Priderock to take a walk, stumbling upon Kovu. The two shared a tender embrace and though Kovu wished to run away from all their problems, Kiara knew she couldn't leave behind her family and her duty as future queen.
As they headed back to Priderock, with a plan to convince Simba to let Kovu back, Ono and Fuli, who'd been searching for Kiara, alerted her of the battle going on, and she rushed to the battle to help without question. Kiara tried her best to convince Zira to stand down and join them, but Zira refused, and Kovu was forced to confront his mother head on, leading to her death. The other Outlanders surrendered, and Kiara was hopeful things would turn out better. Though Simba's leg was damaged beyond repair, and he could no longer lead, Kiara was ready for the burden of leadership, and took on her role seriously. However, nothing could prepare her for the ups and downs that would follow.
Kiara and Kovu had cubs rather quickly, and though Kiara was happy to be expecting her first litter, her queenly duties were beginning to wear her out. There always seemed to be a problem for her to solve, and though Nala and Simba did their best to help, she felt bad about dumping her duties onto them in their retirement. She and Kovu also began to argue more often; the animals and even some of the lionesses complained that Kovu was being too demanding and too controlling, but he denied doing such things. They had many arguments over their respective duties, and Kiara's pregnancy hormones didn't exactly help the situation. She felt she loved him, but now things seemed different, and she worried maybe she'd rushed the relationship.
For a time, the birth of their cubs, Ramla, Shaka, and Binah, seemed to settle things between them, and Kiara was once more convinced that she loved Kovu. But, yet again, another argument came up. Ramla was the first born cub, but a runt, and Kovu thought she would be too weak to be the future ruler, instead choosing Shaka. Kiara had grown especially attached to Ramla due to her being a runt, and she completely disagreed, wanting Ramla to stay the future queen. This was perhaps one of their biggest fall outs, with Kiara defending her decision and Kovu refusing to accept it. These arguments continued even as the cubs grew older, and in their attempts to outdo one another and prove their chosen child was suited to rule, ended up affecting their children and the relationship they had with one another and their parents.
Nala and Simba eventually convinced Kiara and Kovu to hold off on choosing an heir just yet, and finally, Kiara and Kovu could agree on something, but it wasn't much. They remained stubborn in their ways and grew apart more and more. Kiara longed for the love they'd once had, and wished desperately they could have it back, but it seemed he only grew further from her each and every day. Then, one day her world was flipped on its axis: Kovu had been having an affair. It came as a great shock to the pride when Kipande revealed to the pride that Kovu had cheated on Kiara, and not only that, but fathered another child as well. Kiara was devastated, and refused to speak to Kovu despite his attempts. She was heartbroken and confused, and wondered if maybe it was her fault, despite Zuri and Tamu telling her otherwise. One way or another, they had to figure things out, and Kiara and Kovu finally decided to stay together and try to be civil about everything. Their relationship was now more rocky than ever, but Kiara, ever the compassionate lioness, decided to give Kovu another chance, even if she felt her heart couldn't take another break.
