Description
Copper, red cedar bark, dentillium, white clay and cobalt glass beads, and keyhole limpet.2008. 13 x 17 cm (copper portion)
In Sonchun, I hammer worked the edges creating a slight thickening in some places and thinning in others. In this piece I decided to further explore this process. I thickened the center of the bottom a great deal, as well as thickening the curved areas around the lip, while leaving the tips quite thin. I also wanted to explore some of the possibilities offered by hand working the cordage, creating eyes and junctions as I went along, rather than knotting or splicing. Here again the dentilium sets off the dark copper, and the keyhole limpet makes an excellent carrying toggle.
Intended display contents: fragments of sea shell, urchin spines, and bunker coal from shipwrecks.

Those shapes and textures get into my head, particularly the hammer marks on the copper.

The steel wool and liver of sulfur finish really brings out the hammer marks.

I like that. It looks like it just washed up like that.
I'm in Seattle for the summer! Tell me if you're gonna be around, I'd love to come see some of your stuff.

Thanks. I will be teaching in Seattle in June, and probably July and August as well, though we don't have Summer Quarter worked out yet. I will let you know soon. I'm working in Portland right now, but should be finished in a couple of weeks.

Most of these dates are not firm, but it looks as if this will be my Seattle schedule this Summer: 27-29 June, Probably some time in the second half of July, 21-24 August, and 27-28 September. They are thinking about squeezing in a tool making workshop sometime this summer, but they aren't sure when. The first part of July I will be working at the Oregon Country Fair, and Labor Day weekend I will be doing demos at Art In The Pearl, in Portland. Let me know where and when would be good.
Cheers.
