Description Reliquary, silver, stones, enamel, painted and gilded vellum, and holy relic.

It is a bit odd for me to do religous art. I'm certinly a spiritual person, but not christian, and in fact not at all religous. I was brought up a good animest, rocks trees animals the spirit world and all that, but I havent been to any sort of ritual in ages. So it seem odd to have even made this thing. A friend of mine went to Glastenbury some time back, where grows the thorn tree that tradition holds sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. The staff comming to life and growing into a tree is said to be a big miricle, but anyone who has stuck a hawthorn stick into wet ground can tell you it is one you can do your self. Besides it seems a small miricle compared to being Jesus' step dad. Anyway thorn trees shed a lot of branches, and so holy relics are not too hard to get there. My friend brought some back along with jugs of water from the holy well. He collects holy water from shrines and sacred srpings all over the world. It is not the strangest of his hobbies, but he is an odd guy.

The relic is set under a hollowed out bit of rock crystal, about the size of a duck egg. The background is painted sheep vellum, with gold lief around the edge. The body of the work is engraved silver set with stones, and an enamel on the reverse.

I made this thing some time back, but with the new pope and all I thought I would post the pictures.

That's an interesting take on a holy relic.

My very religious friend says that it is in fact a relic of the second degree, that is not actually a part of a holy person, but part of something that belonged to a holy person. Were it not for his pious poverty, he would buy it from me.

Cool, I'll have to try that "mirical" for myself.

Yeah. Metal really is my trip. I also paint and sculpt, grow food, play music, and all that, but metal really talks to me. I'm expressing myself with it, but it expresses itself through me.
