Description Not long ago I was asked to contribute a piece for a show called Entry Denied, The Art of the Chastity Belt, which was being put on as part of Metal Urge, the city of Tacoma's new big metal art festival. I got to thinking about how much packaging comes with everything we buy these days, and it occurred to me that the function of all that plastic and cardboard is more or less the same as that of the chastity belt of days gone by. What it does is provide men with the notion that no one has touched what they are buying. We are paying for the newness as much as we are the piece of hardware. So I bought a computer mouse, and attached it and it's clear plastic clam-shell to a leather covered board. I then made an iron chastity belt, front-panel, complete with hinge and hasps, all to fit the mouse. I framed it, attached the software and instruction booklet to the back and delivered it to the gallery. I had been wondering what sort of locks should be used to secure the hasps, but then noticed that black zip-ties would be just the right thing. The owner was thrilled and pointed out all the erotic associations wee have today with computer hardware as the portal to various forbidden things out on the web. I haden't even thought of that aspect of it; I just liked the shape of the mouse, and was appalled by the volume of packaging that comes with everything now days.

Looks like there is a cherry inside being guarded by a hoo-haa with teeth; but then again it fits with the chastity belt notion, don't cha think?

This is a great concept. I've always thought those fancy roller ball mice (or whatever they are called) were suggestive This sounds like such an awesome show, I wish I lived near Tacoma

Though I wonder how 'forbidden' these fruits really are these days, since any thirteen year old with an internet connection can see everything and more with a few clicks.

I do agree with you that things come in too much packaging, I once bought a small pack of rubber gromets that came in such a big box, the mailman had to bring it to my door. Such a waste, could hardly find what I bought amid all the stupid foam peanuts.

Packaging drives me nuts, has for a long time, and these days it isn't anything that can be used for something else, or that is even fun. When I was little my great grandmother bought a freezer, and I spent weeks rolling down the hills in the cardboard box, making it into a play house, and finally cutting it up and making stuff out of the bits. maybe I'm just as imaginative as I was when I was little one, but I just don't see having that much fun with plastic clam shells, and foam peanuts.

I agree that there is really little that is still really forbidden these days, but in a way that is part of the point. The very notion of the chastity belt is more erotic titillation than sexual protection.

Glad you like the piece. BTW the show has been extended.

Thanks the opening went well, and we got a lot of coverage in the local papers. What is more there were a couple of other pieces in the show that were just as good as mine. There was one that was a leather harness on a manikin with a fold formed owl face over the groin area, and another that was made in silver and niobium six in one chain, to look like a bikini bottom, with a little chain-male pouch that held a little sex toy. There was also a Barbie doll with a set of five different miniature chastity belts in the box with her. I wish I could have stayed for the whole reception, but I had work at two other galleries that were also having receptions at the same time.

Thanks. You are welcome to come to the reception in Tacoma Seriously though I will try to get a better picture up once I finish with all the traveling I have to do in the next couple weeks. I like the new avatar and watermarks your using.

Cheers.
