Description A quick drawing I did for the poster of an event held yesterday night in which a torch was lit form the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Bucharest and taken, in a relay race, all the way to Marasesti, site of the battle of the same name which stopped the Central Powers' advance into Romania during World War One and helped to stabilise the Eastern Front.
Of course, a scant couple of months latter Russia collapsed into revolution and unilaterally withdrew from the war in May 1918, leaving Romania alone and completely surrounded by the Central Powers, which forced her to sign the infamous Treaty of Bucharest , but the collapse of the Central Powers on the Western front reversed the situation with the Treaty of Versailles .

I'm only submitting the drawing rather the whole completed poster because I'm not particularly pleased with the latter. It was a rush job and it shows.
The idea behind the drawing was to have a few historical soldiers pass on a lit torch to a modern day one, and for that I decided on a Roman soldier from Legion XIII Gemina  which was located in Apulum , modern day Alba Iulia, between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, a Wallachian man-at-arms from 1390, during the reign of Wallachian Prince Mircea the Elder and a World War one infantryman.

Because of the tremendously short deadline (one day) I made some use of stock photography as stand-ins for some of the figures, namely this for the Roman Legionnaire, while my brother and I posed for the WW1 and modern soldiers. The medieval man-at-arms doesn't have a direct model, but was instead based on the amazing posters of my friend Radu Oltean , who specialises in historical reconstructions and has seen his work appear in countless magazines, most recently the March 2015 issue of National Geographic .

The device on the shield of the medieval soldier is the Wallachian coat of arms, as it appears on a coin from 1390 .

The modern soldier is dressed in the current camo of the Romanian Army, a licensed copy of the British DPM and wears the 2008 model bullet resistant vest (Levell IIIA on it's own and Level IV with ceramic plates) and kevlar helmet, which proved their worth Afghanistan, where they outperformed the (then current) US "Interceptor" vest.
The body armour is due to be replaced in 2016 with an improved version which will also have a variant designed specifically for the female anatomy , while the uniform will be replaced with a new type of digital camouflage .

The weapon is the PA mod.86, the Romanian version of the Ak74M in the 5.45X39mm calibre, also known to the West as "AIMS-74" and the shoulder patch is that of the Romanian Land Forces High Command (the unit patch is usually worn on the left shoulder, but I thought the drawing needed a bit of colour).

Thought Romania would have stayed with the 7.62 x 39 mm cartridge?  Enough of those lying around anywhere.  I think the NATO countries should shift from the 5.56 mm to this round.  And was Wallachia the home of Vlad Tepes?

The next warrior in line should be a caveman, as the world will surely destroy itself, restarting the cycle.

This is very symbolic and has depth when one looks at the history. Great job, and I love the history.

A very touching piece.  Few people realize the fighting spirit of eastern european nations, including Romania

This IS a bit insulting. We as Romanians had our ancestors DACIANS, not ROMANS. Please document yourself before putting the Roman Soldier as our ancient ancestor. [The Romans only conquered 7% of Dacia, and It was the Rich parts only...]

Aaaaa.

This is actually kind of sad, look how much war has changed, this sounds weird, but there's no more humanity left in it. Vietnam was the last human war, people cared, then that suddenly stopped with Desert Storm. The Western world has become soulless, and uncaring.
